its exactly the opposite, the internet was created by a combination of government and university mediated funding/collaboration.

Yes but the mass distribution of accessibility + the means to communicate so easily is due to the nature of capitalism

  • Oct 17, 2020

Have you ever used government websites? They’re f***ing awful. And that’s what state owned/funded technology looks like

  • Oct 17, 2020

    Google
    Facebook
    Twitter
    Apple
    Microsoft
    Amazon
    Spotify

All make our lives so much easier and employ millions either directly or via their technologies

  • Oct 17, 2020

These threads are always about abolishing capitalism.
Never about fixing the current issues with it.

F*** is wrong with u ppl.

Abolishing it isnt going to happen. Fixing it would be realistic if mother f***ers could get their heads out of their asses.

Because they are direct beneficiaries of that system

You think people who can afford internet have any reason to think capitalism is an evil system that’s destroyed the world when it’s personally helped them so much?

how did this get two likes lol.

the fastest supercomputers in the world run on an open source OS (linux).

the most efficient means of organizing and distributing information is a non profit (wikipedia).

half of the tech companies you listed maintain huge monopolies and lock out competitors with patent wars and backdoor government deals, because the profit margins on info goods are tiny.

and it makes zero sense to mix the profit motive with the internet, the result is an oligopoly in ISPs with terrible and unethical service- prices are too high, rural areas dont get internet because they arent "worth" the investment, and verizon recently throttled the internet of fire fighters responding to a wildfire WHILE they were doing so because they hadnt gotten verizons latest package. thats what happens when you put profit over net neutrality.

and the worst part is that most of this stuff was created by universities and public employees- why should it be privatized, auctioned off, and abused by a couple of billionaires?

you also list companies like apple forgetting that all of the crucial components of the iphone were also made outside of the market sphere.

apple just managed to sloppily put them together with functional slave labour at places like foxconn, and churn out a "new" phone every year. is that supposed to impress me?

  • Oct 17, 2020

tbf jobs and woz were intelligent and their engineering teams are excellent to this day, but to say that their corporate execs are responsible for untold and awe inspiring innovation or some s*** is so damn wrong

Apple making a product that requires suppliers to sell to them indirectly creates jobs idiot. You’re a f***ing dumbass lmao

This whole post is ridiculous as hell lmao. Using the Linux example is horrible considering OS is useless unless it has hardware to run on. Besides, a lot of contributions to developing Linux come from the corporate world/those with ties to the corporate world. Acting as if everything would be the same if we abolish capitalism is very short sighted and is confirmation bias lmao

the point isn't that capitalism should never have existed.

the point is it has existed, and that it no longer needs to exist.
