well most "observable hierarchies" are borne out of things we dont have control over, like familial wealth and genetics.

its pretty reasonable to me that most people want some degree of self-determination

What hierarchies are you talking about that are decided by genetics or familial wealth?

Hierarchy of looks, not really. Bc makeup exists, even plastic surgery, and for men to be considered attractive they generally just need to be physically fit/in shape not necessarily have great genes that gave them a perfect jaw line

Hierarchy of wealth, wealth is actually very hard to manage and keep for a long time. Especially across generations. The only reason money or wealth would continue on in a family is bc of the passing of knowledge not necessarily the passing of money. But the reason it becomes self determined is bc ppl don’t have to act upon that knowledge or even necessarily be smart enough to know what to do with it. A lot of family businesses actually fail. Ppl just have recency bias bc of companies becoming so big recently. But Jeff bezos granddaughter or grandson is most likely going to fumble the bag and their kids will be just regular middle class Americans

It's not about looks necessarily, I used the word "genetics" because you seemed to be implying something about hierarchies and human nature.

Regarding wealth, I'm not commenting on the maintenance of it across multiple generations. I'm just focusing on individuals, and pointing out that the wealth they're born into very often (not always, of course. i myself have benefitted a lot from scholarships and the like) determines the opportunities available to them.

Sure, Bezos' daughter might fumble his wealth, but just the fact that she has billions to fumble is vastly different than being born into an impoverished, deindustrialized ghetto with no adequate schooling, infrastructure, or jobs.

Also a strange example because Bezos has enough money for it to simply be invested and keep his children set for eternity.

Half the billionaires you crucify are all extreme examples of how successful labor-class workers can become.

Not super ideal, unregulated capitalism is always f***ed and everything always ends up in oligopolies. I don't really f*** with the alternative tho at all. We're trapped in some catch 22 economic system. Praying we get at least Universal Healthcare within next two decades. Privatized healthcare is so trash feel f***ing choked having health care tied to my employer.
