learning to do it yourself definitely pays off in the long run but when you're starting up it's really helpful to work with professionals. you get a reference and a base on how you can sound etc. also you might pick up some important things along the way.

    Tru tru you’re right

word, and I never wanna knock the value of having a trusted engineer there while you're recording to be like "yo try doing it this way" or "maybe that word doesn't sound as cool as you think rn" etc lol but that takes a lot of getting to know and trust a collaborator, and that prob won't be the case when you walk into the studio for the first time with anyone

also you never wanna just leave s*** in the hands of a dude and have no idea what he's doing with it. knowing what makes your voice sound good will go such a long way

    Exactly!!!

I’m not saying every artist needs to be an expert but even having a basic understanding of mixing can avoid so many problems

A lot of these engineers get over on local artists because they know they don’t have the knowledge to pick up on a bad mix. Mixing can be tedious. Niggas get lazy and will give you anything because they don’t take you seriously

If you’re lucky enough you can work with an engineer that knows what they’re doing and is willing to listen at times. Learning the terminology and figuring out your direction on your own time makes it easier to verbalize what you want the engineer to do

yeah no doubt. professionals is the key word though. if OP is in a city with a good music scene and can find someone that's dope, then that's great. but there's a pretty good chance he'll end up working with someone (and paying someone) who isn't much better than he might be after taking just a lil bit of time to figure s*** out on their own

100%, making an engineer's life easier by knowing what you want is real s***. if you walk in like one of those high in the drive thru memes "can i get a uhhhhhh" and don't really know what you want yourself to sound like then it can be hard for the engineer anyway

tbh I wanna know what OP's music sounds like and what they're going for to give even more specific advice, cause that would also def determine whether going the home route or working with an engineer is best

if you in SoCal then you can def find a good engineer to work with. but when you do, ask questions and pay attention to what they're doing so you can learn how to do it yourself in the long run
