Cringy brand but I do have the Grateful Dead crocs and tee from that collection. Didn’t really care for the brand I just like the dead and was really into watching hiking docs at the time

it’s kinda a similar situation for me. i’d say 3/4 times they put out garbage, but when they hit, THEY HIT

To me Chinatown market and pleasures are like different sides of the same coin ones friendlier and the other is more edgy. They both occupy the same space as the go to mainstream streetwear brand

you know what a bootleg is? you’re literally saying “they stole an aesthetic/design from another group that stole it, without giving credit to the people that stole it first!” If anything, this gave “bootlegs” more legitimacy.

I’m saying white people came in and profited off another culture without giving back and giving recognition like they KNEW they should’ve in the first place.

You know a perfect time to announce a name change & dedication to fundraising would have been? The year prior when articles were published globally about how chinatowns everywhere were struggling due to blatant hate and racism towards asians because of covid.

But they didn’t. Why not? Because its become so destigmatized and normalized for white people to pick and choose what they want to take from marginalized communities without giving credit or reparations. Then after that, they rewrite the rules and history so they don’t actually look like the bad guy in the scenario.

I agree that it would’ve been good for them to give back to chinatowns during that time, and i apologize if I’ve misunderstood you. All i’m trying to say is that i don’t think calling it “chinatown market” is that huge of a deal when it’s spinning a negatively viewed thing in a positive direction. However, i can’t speak for asian communities who may view thus a cheap use of their culture. Honestly, i think it would be better if they didn’t change their name and continued to donate a large portion of profits from things labeled “chinatown” to help those communities. thanks for giving me a different perspective

You not wrong about this part tho. as an asian person I could care less about their brand name/that s*** isn’t really that offensive to me tbh.

Copped stuff early early early on before the smiley s***, but I really soured on them and don’t think anything they put out is anything more than mallcore trash

The COVID Asian hate s*** woulda been cool of them to do since they picked “Chinatown” as opposed to “Flea” but everyone got flea markets man lol

but why is it that when associated with whiteness, it’s now viewed as “positive” or higher end?

another example of this is when chinese food is labelled as cheap, greasy, junk food when that type of chinese food isn’t even authentic. white people come in, gentrify it, and charge 3x what chinese-owned restaurants can charge

  • Jul 2, 2021

also looks like they’re busy cranking out cringy graphics with “chinatown” still in their name than working towards a name change they loved to virtue-signal

The unfortunate thing is that you still need to be a grifting slimeball in order to have a shot as a prominent progressive candidate like stringer wiley or morales, but I would be surprised if we didn’t see a lot more progressives running successful campaigns the next election cycle. Progressives need to win over concerned parents, union workers, and old people, so Chang might have a much brighter future ahead of him if he plays his cards right the next few years

Also Curtis Sliwa’s campaign has been hilarious lmao. He’s used the exact same slogans and anecdotes in at least 20 interviews

Indifferent tbh, they lost their appeal once they became another mallcore brand with subpar designs

  • Aug 16, 2021

I have a few pieces from their older drops. Dont really like what they been dropping recently.

  • Dec 15, 2021

Just saw the spring MA®KET collection, how's ktt feel about it a couple months later?

Yea they took what bootleg shops in Chinatown were doing, profited off it tenfold all while using the name Chinatown and not properly recognizing or giving back to the OGs. So in short, culture vultures.

Mike himself said since he's white he didn't want to 'cross the line' and make asian products. Which means they knew they were in the wrong and still didn't care to change the name sooner or highlight Asian community causes because they were trying to play it safe. Again, culture vultures.

From what I read they originally wanted to call it Dover Market or something similar? iirc but it was already taken, so he went with the neighborhood that was nearby

  • Dec 15, 2021

I thought they changed their name but I still see it for sale with the old name on some sites
