I keep seeing Taylor Swift fans dissecting lyrics on her new album and connecting them to events, creating narratives and arguing over whether X person did Taylor wrong or how Taylor feels about them. I feel like this Drake Kendrick beef is really heavily based in artist lore too, rather than being purely about who is the better rapper it’s more about who can discredit the others image. However, I don’t really know if that’s a bad thing, because at the end of the day, music is personal and knowing more about the person who made it can make it feel more authentic and relatable.

Basically, do you think it’s beneficial to know details of a an artists life that extends beyond what they say in their music?

With someone like drake it’s beneficial yes.

    With most artists probably not

  • A little I guess. Lore got nothing to do with why any of my favorite songs are my favorites song though.

only matters if I enjoy their music

but for someone like Taylor Swift the background is what the fans use to put additional meaning into the songs that ultimately could be about anyone

I think its a bit different for rappers because there's an expectation that the music is about their real life, while in Pop there's not really that same level of utility in how fans hear the music

if the album is conceptual or focused on a certain theme i think generally yeah it benefits from at least knowing that its based off of something that really happened to the artist, like it kinda helps understand the messaging/intent of the artist

like for example I think Here My Dear by Marvin Gaye benefits from knowing that half of the album's proceeds were given to his ex-wife as part of a divorce settlement because it adds to the sincerity of his passive-aggressiveness in the spoken word parts, (and explains why the most direct statement to her/best song When Did You Stop Loving Me... appears like 3 times throughout the album lol)

TL;DR if the "lore" is directly related to the album's story/concepts I think it can help you understand it better but i don't need the fine details i'm listening to music not reading an autobiography of the artist

    Exactly.

When there isn’t a concept to justify this investigation, your whole a***ysis of the album becomes simply voyeuristic. Which is why “swifties” like this s*** so much.

    God, I hate fandoms.

  • The music will always be the most important thing to me at the end of the day, but I do love a good artist story/persona.
And from a marketing perspective, the story, the persona, the “look” is arguably more important than the music in helping break an artist through

  • I only ever hear the lore from ktt comments. Guys on here seem to know the name of every guy drake hangs out with and employs.
