I appreciate the talk. I'm Southeast Asian born and raised in the U.S., so I know what your friend's talking about. We got a lot of immigrants coming over, seeing or experiencing bad things from black people, because they start out living in hoods, sometimes the worst areas in the country. Unfortunately, that's all they see and all they know, so they assume all black people are like that. They dial back home and tell their friends and families about this, so the ones back home start believing it. That's how stereotypes spread.

It's all sad. Exactly why I think it's a huge misunderstanding that, hopefully, we young ones can clear up and bring real changes.

I'm passionate about this topic because I just want us all to get along and see just how much we have in common culturally. It makes me happy when I see us appreciating and respecting each other's cultures.

It’s a never ending cycle, just gotta lead with love and understanding and try to spread those ideals to your family/friends. Some people will always live life in fear or anger and we just gotta let them ride it out if they don’t get it

Some of y'all have this complex about Asians being racist due to media's portrayal black people and you know this, but have no desire to change their perceptions and let them know you come in peace. How are you gonna expect to change anything when you're too busy giving them the stank eye and being passive-aggressive towards them?

Most people in homogenous countries are going to be wary of foreigners regardless of what skin color you are. You just gotta make sure to let them know you come in peace.

This is the prime example of how it's done. People love it when others are respectful towards them. Just smile and show them you appreciate and respect their culture.

Generally the old folks still have their biases but the younger generation is getting much better. Same with the rest of Asia/the world.

if you're from a western country, it's going to be a significant cultural shock. it's not as severe as going to a place like Japan, but you'll still have to face it.

and this isn't mundane s*** like "you don't have to tip in SK", it's sweeping aspects like individual values, societal zeitgeist, and laws. I feel like not many people mention this when they talk about moving to a totally different part of the world.

My mans said black people need to "change their perceptions and let them know you come in peace" like they're an alien species landing on a foreign planet.

No, dude, you just have to make the effort to reach out to them and be friendly. What do you expect when they have little to no experience with black people and you're already giving them the stank eye, rationalizing their preconceived ideas about you (likely from media) even more?

Lmao for real, how are you going to make a prejudice, generalized statement about an entire group of people being prejudiced

Why are you being purposely obtuse?

It’s just a super ignorant thing to say. China has widespread human rights violations. They are run by a piece of s*** government. That has nothing to do with them being “Asian”, and it has literally nothing to do with Korea.

You can look up any anti-black incident in ANY country and say the same thing. China's a country of billions of people, but you're basing your opinion of an entire CONTINENT (not just China) based on a few videos and hearsay social media posts.

You're acting like they were kicking out every single black person all across the country when it was probably just a few isolated incidents. There are tons of black professional basketball players in China. Nothing happened to them.

The whole situation seems blown out of proportion anyway. Word has it that it wasn't even government-mandated and that it was just a few citizens kicking foreigners out regardless of skin color.

My mans said black people need to "change their perceptions and let them know you come in peace" like they're an alien species landing on a foreign planet.

That's exactly how they generally view foreigners, though. They've had little to no experience with people outside their own ethnicity, so they'll look at you as if you're an alien at first. They're even wary of other Asian ethnicities/nationalities due to stereotypes, political conflict, and previous wars.

Why are you assuming that all Black people are going around generalizing Asians?

In addition, being passive towards it won’t change anything either.

Also, if you often notice comments about anti-blackness is asian communities on KTT, wouldn’t you say that its an issue then?

When and where did I say anything about all black people are going around generalizing Asians? I was talking about specifically people who come into a thread, make generalized statements about a race/ethnicity, and leave it at that instead of explaining nuances.

I never said anything about being passive about it. Anti-blackness IS any issue, but so is anti-Asianness. If there's anything you got from the convo between @Midds and me, it should be that we, the younger ones, should talk about it if we want change. It starts with dialogue, something older generations of black and Asian people couldn't do due to the language barrier. I feel like all this tension between blacks and Asians is due to a huge misunderstanding and could easily be resolved if our generation decided to talk it out instead of making passive-aggressive comments on Internet forums.

I'm here to talk about it because I want changes. I've done it before with @dior last year and we were able to clear things up, and I believe we can collectively do it again.
