his albums are really f***ing good

they perfectly encapsulate the coolest parts of the cultural space he occupies, at least for the time when he made them. like Channel Orange is the coolest s*** out of 2012, distilled and perfectly packaged. very high production value too.

same goes for blonde. arguably no other album does a better job of capturing what 2016 was all about.

influence is a really really nebulous metric, its goofy asl to me when ppl try to rank artists based on that. The music is rlly good and emblematic of the time it was made. that's what matters

U spent two paragraphs explaining how good frank ocean's music is because he was influenced by the coolest s*** from the "cultural spaces" he occupied (very subjective but ok)

Then proceeded to call "Influence" a goofy and nebulous metric

    I'm genuinely confused

Because he isn’t. It’s actually really simple

Frank is (no bias) one of the greatest songwriters of our generation

He’s able to write powerful songs in an ambiguous way, not a lot of people can do that

    Expand on this please

ur right, both parameters are subjective

but, subjectively, I think the first one is not as goofy as influence.

his two brain cells are jousting for first place, disregard

this talk of music being holistically subjective is a product of materialism, it’s genuinely amazing how much this mindset permeates this society

  • Apr 18, 2023

only over here in the U.S you will see critically acclaimed, highly impactful, influential albums etc. be completely neutered and devalued to how someone feels about it, because… reasons

s*** is so egocentric it makes me nauseous

  • Apr 18, 2023

By “generation” do we mean era of music, a certain age cohort, etc. ? Frank is no longer a significant player in music and has been gone for a while, but he was def a top tier artist of the 2010s.

Better songwriting than half the industry.

the art which he hasn’t updated in 7 years

    Some art take time

Because Blonde tapped into a very popular aesthetic / scene (vapid fake-deep male art hoe) and did it very well
I think it's s***e but its popularity is no mystery

    https://twitter.com/nfr_podcast/status/1579139086769537025

How did blonde do that in your opinion

  • DonutHole

    Expand on this please

Look at songs like Bad Religion, Crack Rock, White Ferrari, Sierra Leone

It takes talent to use metaphors for entire song concepts

The way he says things is not just “I loved you, you hurt me, now I’m running away”

He will tell stories with good imagery and metaphors, it’s hard to do that in a way that doesn’t sound forced while STILL having emotional impact

Because a bunch of children who were "rap fans" got laundered into Frank through Odd Future (only s*** they listened to besides Kanye) and he broke their cherry on the music they eventually abandoned being "rap fans" for

What are some other acts like him in that sense; examples of the music that rap fans in that sense would abandon rap for

nah 2017 was a good year for dude, things really started to go to s*** with the merch bs in 2020 and arguably with DHL (i like the song but bro is talking nonsense on it)

Seem like very similar songs lol

Remember that article about him and his hype house friends doing dumb ass art installation carpentry at some mansion

Just saw it yesterday, this is 100% what he’s been doing for 7 years

If you are asking this you have to place yourself in 2011 and watch his career trajectory until 2017, and that's where things started to go for his legacy.

All downhill after Chanel->Biking->Lens->Provider all came out. I’m guessing he was readying a new album with all that but became dissatisfied with it.

Frank is definitely overrated. He’s a great artist though. But not to the level his Stan’s make him out to be. But that’s what Stan’s do so 🤷🏾‍♂️

I can see him being overrated.m, but it’s rare for me to like albums as much as I do CO & Blonde.

these albums really important in folks lives, you can say it’s tumblr inspired but a whole generation fell in love with the content through that

This is how I feel. I enjoy his music but I don’t think he’s the second coming like most people believe. Also, I just have a thing against artist who not only can’t perform live, but are unprofessional at that.

Bc he’s head and shoulders above artists in the same genre

if the genre is mid than yeah
