Idk if I see myself listening to contemporary hip hop in my 30s. I think rock and metal are going to make a comeback

  • Oct 5, 2024

I dont think we are riding strong now lol

The genre is in way more danger when the OGs decide to step back rather than the actual popularity although you could argue there is a bit of correlation there. We cannot have dudes being on the forefront not even giving a s*** about the actual rapping aspect of it

It's gonna be pretty rough once the 35+ old established rappers step aside or slow down.

No joke. The only rappers under the age of 35 who cracked 100+k fw this year were Travis Scott(with the help of bundles) and 21 Savage. Even Gunna couldn't do it.

Meanwhile, Future did it twice. Kanye did it twice. Eminem did it. And Cole did it with a borderline mixtape project.

That's not a good sign at all and Travis himself is getting there in age despite his level of dominance.

Also, as @Jbreezyondeck said, it's pretty damn hard to take many of these Rage rappers, Drill rappers, Thot rappers, and Autotune crooning rappers seriously as the new ringleaders of rap. Even many people who f*** with their music don't take them that seriously. Few people are going to unironically rank Carti, Yeat, SexyRedd, Gunna, Youngboy, Megan, Rod Wave, Ken Carson, etc. with the likes of Nas, Kendrick, Jay, Pac, Em, Lauryn, Eve, Wayne, Outkast, Kanye(as an artist), Pharrell(as an artist), etc.

Let's see. Under the age of 35, I'd say Travis is the biggest star by a landslide. After Travis, you have Tyler, Lil Baby, Uzi, Carti, Gunna, Doja Cat, Jack Harlow, Durk, and Rod Wave who are capable of going Platinum or Gold in this day and age. Cardi might be in it too but she's kinda retired at this point. How many of these are going to have true bonafide legacies in the rap world and be deemed GOAT lyricists or GOAT artists? Some names seem to be in the convo but not the majority.

That said, I think the Indie Rap scene will thrive more than ever before with quality music.

    Dominance in what sense?

  • Oct 5, 2024

I feel like it can have a resurgence eventually

but we're in desperate need of good rappers

  • Oct 5, 2024

hip hop still dictates whats cool but its barely on the charts anymore

What about rappers like redveil and Cordae? I think there's still some strong artists but they're just not popular like those rage / drill rappers kind of are.

I think the artists who are "in between" being mainstream and being Indie like JID, Cordae, Vince, Denzel, JPEG, etc. will always have a strong fanbase and following but, sadly, they won't be deemed ringleaders due to the lack of commercial appeal.

But, strictly musically, I think those guys as well as the actual Indie guys will carry rap quality wise.

Yeah he's cool. There's a few "stick to the roots" type of rappers still around but sadly they have niche fan bases that aren't comprised of the youth really (which are the people who dictate the popularity of the genre).

    And yes!!

  • Oct 5, 2024

~5 more years then it’ll be weird AI mashups and genre blending forever but rap as a music style is solidified even if it becomes pop

Kanye in his prime is a way better rapper than these guys you listed didn‘t need to add the (as an artist)

Agreed. Those are the underground gems that are carrying the whole genre right now. In a way it's really just commercial and popular rap that has gone to s***. Where is the hunger with these new guys?? Who's there to take the torch from Cole, Drake, and Kenny?

They probably don‘t take the GOAT conversation as serious as Kendrick, Cole & em did. This generation is way more collaborative than competitive I‘d say maybe I‘m wrong.

    True.

Hell, I'd argue Ye in some doses today can spit a better 16 than many on here but you know how it's risky to give Ye props on here these days lol.

they become competitive when it comes to fashion, aesthetics and clout/numbers tho.
