So I just found out Datpiff has an app and downloaded several classic mixtapes like No Ceilings, House of Balloons, Days Before Rodeo, Kid Named Cudi, 56 Nights just to name a few.
Then I started to think how creative and fresh all of these projects are. Artists just wanted to be found and not just have millions of streamings on other peoples playlists. And they had the freedom to sample comercial songs because they weren't making any money directly from it. They just sampled and made whatever they felt to those songs.
Several artists were revealed this way like Travis, Abel, Frank Ocean, Cudi, Kendrick, Rocky and they are all better than more recent artists.
So how do y'all feel about this? I see a lot of people complaining about how hip hop has gone weaker but I rarely see any discussion about how it has come to this

Mixatpes aren't dead if anything the focus on making tapes instead of fully fleshed albums is what's got the game f***ed up.
Everyone tryna be Wayne and Future

I agree.
Mixtapes were popular before Lil Wayne, but I think the string of Wayne, Cudi, Cole, Drake, and that wave of rap all blowing up on mixtapes made it to where artists treated their first or best Mixtape like artists before Wayne treated their first Album.
That's why when you think about Drake, Cole, Wale, Future, Nicki, Big Sean, ASAP Rocky, Joey Badass, etc. all their best material were on their most acclaimed Mixtapes. But most of their albums are usually subpar in comparison and almost none of their first studio albums are true classics.
The Mixtape trend definitely killed the level of effort Rappers put into their debut albums, which I believe had a domino effect to where albums are filled with songs that shouldn't have made it on just to pump streams.

I don't think rappers cared about their debut album less than they cared about their mixtapes. Debut albums were a big deal.
Rappers who made successful mixtapes just happened to know how to make mixtapes. When it came to making albums they just didn't know the recipe.

All worth it
remember when you could label artists as “mixtape artists” vs. “album artists”?
like Meek’s mixtapes were amazing, but everyone trashed his albums, leading people to call him a mixtape artist
nowadays there’s not much of a difference

Mixtape Wiz was like some hidden treasure that only the chosen ones deserved to know of
I remember when Acid Rap dropped and it was all original songs and media started making think pieces about what’s even the difference between tapes and albums anymore

So do you think the artists just outgrew stealing beats or just there is no point on giving free songs on the streaming era?

Lol not lying
So do you think the artists just outgrew stealing beats or just there is no point on giving free songs on the streaming era?
Since rap became less about bars jumping on someone else’s song to remix it (like Wayne used to) became pointless because most likely the song was liked because of the melody or hook
