so spotify has a net income of negative €186,000,000 so i dont think a few more dollars in the red will change anything
wait wdym they take 30-40 percent of revenue off rip? Cause techinically there is actually no revenue made per stream by AM or spotify, since their revenue is what ever the monthly subscription is. And every payout per stream is just a cost.
I think essentially of that revenue they take a 30% cut before starting to distribute it out based on streams
Also, are you trying to make people pay more for streams or what
Mods, shut down this thread
just trying to highlight AM/Spotifys kind of flawed business model. And yes if you wanted the artist to get richer then inevitably we'd have to pay more
I love that u took the time to think of this and then come here and write it.
yea wanted to invest in spotify so doing some a***ysis, and found this hilarious
OP this doesn't work unless every user on spotify or AM does this. In order to make them lose money, you need to make up for all the users who aren't listening to 57 hours/month.
yes, but if you individually listen to more the 57 hours then you are costing them money
no but spotify's new feature will allow artists to give up their royalties in exchange for a better spot in their playlists which is complete bs
damn then how do artist even make money?

honestly i can see why they want to pivot away from music and more into podcast

I’m trynna get money tho

they hope that by being on playlists they'll get more plays for cheaper and get more
instead of getting 1000 plays for 0.007$ they'd get 5000 plays for 0.003$ or something like that
but since big labels have the budget to do this and smaller artists dont, you'll either see drake on every playlist where there used to be more lowkey acts
or everybody will accept to give up their royalties and it will cancel itself out except artists will get even less
they make money from merch and shows but in a pandemic that's not happening
How come they're already losing money if it takes that much
developing cost, hosting server cost, management cost, ads... honestly a lot of ways to lose money

ohh okay so its not exactly that they are gonna get 0 royalties but just a heavily reduced one.

I find it strange how Spotify vs Netflix is actually so different. I dont think it is possible for artist to be exclusive only one platform, eg drake's views was only exclusive for a week. like do you think its possible in the future ppl would both be on AM and spotify, like they are for netflix and disney. I dont think it is, i feel music is much more commoditied then movies and TV. So people aren't willing to pay as much for it.
On a second note, do you think it is possible for spotify and AM to replace music labels. Cause if you think about it now days most artist can just do promotion by them selves on social media, and if they manage to get into one of the playlist thats the best type of promotion. Really leaving music label as the useless middle man

I think exclusivity for music rn hurts artists/labels so not gonna happen soon
But I do think in time these DSPs are gonna start to act as labels and at that point exclusivity is incredibly likely to happen
you’re giving them buckets of data on the flip side, going to their algos and such. no idea why you think it’d be a negative to Spotify. that’s why they have a free version beside ads.

The data is only worth money if you can make money off it. The data that they collect is just used to better retention, and if you stay on the platform long enough and listen to enough music they lose money. Unless somehow someone finds a way to use your music listening history to sell you products I don't think the data they have is that much more valuable.
