I guess it's true that her overall aesthetic has been refined over the years and is defo clearer now than it was on those albums which helps
her older works aged like fine wine, and only increased the hype for her newer catalogue. a lot of her older songs are blew up on tik tok
it was but got mid reviews and none of her next few albums had same impact. I think her sound pivoted away from that sound very quickly too
No one gives a f*** about reviews except people who read music publications (ie people like me). If you went off reviews you’d think J Cole was a relatively meh artist in terms of popularity and Bob Dylan was the best selling musician of all time and was played at every cookout.
I swear her first 2-3 albums got kinda ehhhh reviews, don't think she was seen as a particularly noteworthy artist but obviously had some stans.
Feel like at some point some album of hers started getting huge buzz, great review scores etc and that opened the floodgates and ever since it feels like she has quadrupled in size as an artist, popularity etc.
Now this is neither me hating or stanning but I just don't really think those first few albums were massively worse than her later ones and in the same way I don't think the later ones were that much better. So the full 180 in the ways mentioned seems crazy to me.
Need an ldr historian rn
Made music about being a hot girl that does nothing while evoking nostalgia for prior eras of American culture. Resonated with young women, her music sounds like a breath of fresh air when you compare it to the other stuff coming out at the time, and she got better over time artistically so other demographics could enjoy her.
I thought pitchfork praised her out the gate
Nah they gave BTD a 6.something I think
Sidebar, from what I recall, Lana wasn't that popping with her current fan base until after the summertime sadness remix blew up
Her being so big with those types is funny because her extremely conservative vibe doesn’t really align with them
Her music and aesthetic is probably the most regressive s*** you can find, nostalgia for a whiter america, and she’s publicly trashed black women basically saying “think of the white women”
Nostalgia for the past =/= conservative. This is especially the case in situations like these, where she essentially just calls back to benign pop culture and fashion.

Thats true but I think he’s saying how did she become such a critically acclaimed artist now and its just because the narrative of her first 2albums changed with time after they proved to be influential and then she started dropping critically acclaimed albums at the same time

I’d rock with that if she didn’t go on that rant about how black women singers are unjustly getting the success that she actually deserves.
Add being anti mask and dating a cop and idk if it’s just the fashion she’s interested in
Her first 3 albums are super praised, you probably wasn't there at the time
I was there at the time, she had a huge fanbase but she had lots of critics and people who doubted her originality
But time has proven those people wrong and the albums are a lot more generally praised now, there was definitely a divide then

The divide was from her aesthetic: 60s pin up chick
Half the ppl wanted to go back in time; the other half didn't want their asses lynched & killed
Lana has since gravitated to a more modern look
This is “more modern” to you?

The modern look: a camo hat that says Route 66 on it
