i guess there was no verification that i really am hadji gaviota. this s*** kinda is the wild west rn and youve made some good points throughout

i also think that as the creator of the remix i would need to give them express consent to post it on a streaming service and make money off of it. but truthfully i dont know the answer to that. im sure that bigger NFTs like the tory lanez or kings of leon ones has specific stipulations about that

But you are just the creator, they are the owners now. No?

Just like I am the owner of my house because I bought it, the creator of the house isnt the actual owner of the house.

    And also...

So theoretically I could just find some amazing art pieces on the internet right now and sell em as NFTs for some real $$ even though I don't even actually own them?

NFTs turn everything and anything into a tradeable financial commodity. It’s a great idea that’s being founded on an anti ethical principle and I refuse to support any artists that hop on the nft wave. I love the idea of artists being able to monetize digital art and secure royalties and have its value increased. But it’s also lame because I feel like it takes away our ability to make non-commodified art. Environmental issues too but I think that can be taken care of swiftly.

The answer to his question is...

    they own the NFT

They dont own the licensing or rights of the song now.

If that were the case, then couldn't I go buy a CD in a store and since I "bought" it, now I can upload it to spotify bc its "mine"? Obviously the answer is no. And its the same in this case

What they paid for. was for the digital signature that says they own a signed copy of something

As far as the digital signature being authentic; yeah, that is on bitski fault for not having more type of verification but that will prolly get ironed out over time. I think the fact that you linked to Bitski yourself on your own verified Instagram is enough for the fans/anyone in the future to see that as verification but in the future these NFT platforms do need to create some type of Guarantee of Authenticity (the twitter NFT that Jack sold of his first tweet; he had to login to the site using Twiiter Login which obvi only Jack himself would have the password to his own account to authorize that)

    why should me care?

totally respect this approach too. as a consumer im not really interested in NFTs. and I was approached by a visual artist that I really respect to do this, which was pretty much my motivation for doing it. i don't know if i'll be doing more outside of this partnership or making it a regular thing, and i do feel some of that queasiness you allude to about commodification of stuff

also familiar with the environmental issues and also feel like they should be ironed out pretty quickly

But why would someome pay $50 for a "copy" of a picture if they cant even use it thenselves ? Why didnt they just download it off his IG page? Wouldnt that basically be the same?

    @Gmbruh no

They do not own the rights/license to the music

Buying an NFT is the digital equivalent of Kanye West pulling a Yeezus CD out of his pocket, signing it with a sharpie and then handing it to you

That CD is now more valuable bc it has Kanye signature
You own that physical CD but you dont own the rights to the music on the cd so you cant go sell the "music" itself but yea you can sell the physical cd.

Just take that concept of physical, put it into digital and that is what an NFT is

the motivation for a lot of people to purchase these is that they think they might go up in value over time and thus be worth more than the original investment. in some ways its like dogecoin or something lol

the demographics of the 20 customers i got today is pretty interesting, i bought one myself, so did the creator and a friend, and then three more people i knew. everyone else who bought it, so more than 50%, are people who prob dont even know who i am lol

    No...

I can go on @hadjigaviota Instagram right now and download or screenshot the picture right? And you can too, sure

But neither of us have a "signed" version of that picture.
If you were to show that picture to your friend, you couldnt truthfully say "This picture was signed by the original artist"

Idk why signatures of anything have any value but they do, so NFTs are taking advantage of that

Why do ppl pay more for a signed Michael Jackson Album vs just a non signed copy?

yea pretty much. i really made this thread not to promote but just to be a test case and have people figure out what the hell an NFT is thru my experience. because i sure as hell didnt get it 2 months ago either!

If you really wanted to you could sell full rights and distribution. Ryder Ripps sold a meme he made and included it with the original photoshop file as well as giving up full ownership rights.

So Can I just remake a meme on photoshop and sell it as the original one for full rights? Along with the photoshop .PSD file

You can, but it won’t be from the originator! so yours would be worthless

    Ya.
But that extra stuff is just an add on, not necessarily the NFT itself. But yes, you can sell anything you want to go along/package with the NFT. What Ryder Ripps did is more like a Bundle version . Hadji also gave some extra things with his NFT

But in order to sell full rights and distribution of music , a lot more paperwork would have to go into it other than a "verbal agreement" to it. Like, if Kanye walked up to me and said "I give you full ownership of all my music" doesnt mean i actually legally own it

He'd have to do paperwork to sign it over to me
Idk for sure if Ryder Ripps did all that paperwork ahead of time and included it in the package, or maybe its different for photos/pictures than music but yeaaaaa

How would they know that I am not the originator?

the same way you know anyone or anything is not the originator of something
In order for someone to really want to spend the money, you are going to have to be the one to bring proof that you are the owner

Or, if someone is dumb enough to pay a lot without proper verification that you are the owner then more power to ya

Well for one, most of the sites where NFTs are sold are invite only lol and the artists are verified
