  • I understand he has the hits down to a science but when people apply that same formula to anyone else it comes out fake and heartless and not good. how the f*** has he been consistently dropping hits from the early 2000's to now with no switch up in song structure or genre and it doesn't sound dated. this is a code red, max Martin if you're reading this come out of the closet homie

The answer is because he’s a genuinely talented songwriter who truly loves music. Also his love of black music is genuine unlike a lot of other industry songwriters.

he’s just a genius; i think even he overrates the “formula’s” impact on his success. his talent just isn’t recognized on that level as often because it’s mainstream pop

Damn some of these records I didn't even know he did

Out of Time from XO is crazy good, but that's kind of where I'm about to go with this.

He's obviously a genius level songwriter, but so much of what makes a song successful or a "hit" goes beyond a songwriter's ability. It really comes down to how hot or buzzing an act is, how much legwork the act has done, how willing the label is to get behind the record, how willing the act is to work the record, etc.

Things that go far beyond the songwriter's talents. He's a genius and he's written a ton of my favorite records ever but his impact on hit records is definitely over emphasized.

His genius is being able to see and feel what's right under his nose.

People will be in the studio racking their brains for hits and he'll just be like "kiss me baby one more time" lol

That's not just Max thing either. Like in general, (idk if you've ever written a song or not) the hardest thing to do when writing a record is just getting out of your own way.

Literally Any and everything that you see or say or experience can be used as source material for a hit. Some of the cheesiest most low hanging fruit have been the source to like Diamond records, and max is a genius at that.

Even w/the song structure of hit records right, the emphasis is obv on the hook but the verses are like 4 bars - prehook - hook. I love max as a writer because he's soooo simple and it's so hard to get to that level of simplicity with song writing.

Drake is another guy who's just flat out a beast in that regard.

max has talent but its important that at some level, past success litterally creates new success. His legacy does work on the success of new music he does commerically via placements
