FellaExactly. There’s some fun stuff in the MCU but I think they’re a little weak when it comes to drama and I think that has to do with them trying to downplay every serious moment with a quirky awkward joke. They’re very afraid of being completely sincere. Raimi even when he’s totally leaning into the campy side of things is 100% sincere about it. He’s totally committed to these characters and their issues.
I think Spider-Man 3 is really strong with its drama too but people often overlook it cause they think the venom stuff is messy and they don’t get some of the intentional camp. I think it’s still criminally underrated. It’s almost Shakespearean in how heavy some things gets in that movie. There’s a scene with Peter and Mary Jane in the park later in the film that always gets me emotional.
