is it really unreasonable to say macklemore wasn't the most popular rapper in 2013
they were garbage but their first two singles went #1 in 2013 and the album sold a LOT. the grammy too
Numbers aside, they were everywhere. Radio played them nonstop. TV commercials, MTV & VH1, retail stores, sold out tours and constant media coverage.
Album sales and billboard charts tell a small portion of the story but they were f***in huge. Couldn't watch a Knick game without Can't Hold Us playing in-between breaks.

Hardly considered him a rapper. But even then that album and singles came out in 2012. Those 2 singles may have went number 1 in 2013 but idk how that qualifies you as the most popular rapper in the year nwts, yeezus, and mmlp2 which did more than what his album did in months in a week

So if he’s rap even if it’s dogshit and even he was far more popular in the general public compared to Yeezus
NWTS and MMLP2 were competition but even then there was a massive cultural presence Macklemore had
It’s not unbelievable that he had the most popular year

Massive cultural presence to who tho ? We talking bout rappers and the culture associated with that genre and in that case drake exceeds macklemore in that regard by a lot that year and sold more records than him that year too by quite a bit

If that is the criterion Kevin Gates would be top 5 rappers. Most Americans are white and that's where the money is
If Cole dropped 2014 FHD earlier that year it would have been him, but the album probably wouldn’t have been as impactful as it was.
Also if we’re placing Macklemore up there then Pharrell deserves a spot for Happy

We’re not talking about popularity within tbe culture associated with hiphop though. Nobody itt made any mention of that. We’re talking straight up popularity within the entire commercial base of the world.

Is that the point tho. Yeah he wasn’t accepted within rap but cacs we’re gobbling him up like he was the next em

You said he had a massive cultural presence and we're speaking of rappers feel like it was implied. But if not and if ur talking about a general pop culture that would just be measured by sales then in which drake had more of. And no one made mention of a global commercial base either

They actually ran 2013 with having multiple massive hits. Thrift Shop, Can’t Hold Us, Same Love, and White Walls were all dominating the radio and everyone was bumping them
