For me atleast, I loathe half the mixing and some of s*** vocals recorded from his phone.
Is it a terrible album? No. But its pretty disappointing for Ye standards, especially considering what he gave us 2 years later with DONDA, which tackled the religious angle much, much better.
Don’t worry you’ll love JIK2 when it drops. Apparently Dr. Dre is mixing it!
Kanye’s fanbase post 2010 has been overrun by white hipsters. The most dangerous kind of people because they can hide their passive racism behind a thin veneer of faux-progressivism. So there’s two things going on here. A) they prefer “artsy” hip hop because that is more comfortable for their white, indie music sensibilities. JIK is a raw gospel album - a historically black genre of music - and isn’t quirky enough and doesn’t have any Bon Iver features so naturally they want nothing to do with it. B) Even tho they’ll never admit it, they prefer their black entertainers to be wilding out making fools of themselves - as long as it doesn’t offend their liberal proclivities. They can’t stand seeing a black man search for meaning and positivity in his life. This reaction is further exacerbated because it’s explicitly religious music. I’m an atheist but many of these edgy types think religion is a purely evil thing which can’t possibly be a source for some people to grow, change, and better themselves which is false.
So it’s a combination of casual liberal racism and people simply not being actual hip hop fans (which is a byproduct of said racism)
Kanye’s fan base has always been full of white people.
Anyways, you say that the “white hipsters” are passive racists but you’re the one generalizing a huge group of people that you haven’t met. Then you say that people prefer black people to “wild out” as if you know what every “white hipster” is thinking all the time.
Personally I don’t think about the race or religious background of the artist I listen to beyond whatever they write in their music. And I know a lot of Kanye West fans and every one of them loves Jesus Is King just as much as Donda or any other ye album, whether they’re white or black has nothing to do with which albums they enjoy. Maybe things are different where you live and people are much easier to “convince” and as such maybe what you’re saying is true and practically every “white hipster” dislikes JIK. But where I live, almost everyone was into JIK. I even played the music of JIK loudly in my car while driving around a college and a student yelled and said “is that Jesus is King!?” And I said “yes” and he said “I’ve been loving what Kanye has been saying and doing with that album”.
Anyways, JIK is one of Kanye’s best albums. Kanye makes excellent albums so any one of his albums can be considered his best and there’s really none that stand far above the rest.

It has a couple of good ideas but the final body of work just does not live up to its potential. Kanye clearly had a lot to say during this era and the idea of having the Sunday Service Choir was great. But for some reason the lyrics fall flat, production doesn’t really go anywhere and the project just doesn’t feel finished at all. Take that and add bad mixing and poor quality for some of the vocal recordings and you have a below average album, especially for someone with Kanye’s standards. I feel like this could’ve been so much better.
Like all 10s Ye albums, it would be classic if someone else rapped on it
MBDTF was in the 10s
