Apple killed iTunes in 2018. Why would they want you to buy something once when it’s so easy to make you pay a lifetime fee for access to it? I meant I use iTunes to check out snippets and such.

itunes is f***ing ass if we're being real though. Having to convert s*** from flac to m4a is a pain. Probably better off with one of those newer portables

an iPod classic is crazy even if you replace the storage with flash

I have a classic and touch, they're fun to play with but I can't imagine using them as my main music devices

sony has a lot of nice ones

all the ones i’ve seen have headphones jacks usually with superior quality over an old mp3 player

a used nw-a55 is a cheaper option

i just use ipod touches, ipod classics and old phones with lots of storage and download through my laptop and put em in those devices.
i love my library.

if you don't mind chinese stuff might be worth looking into Fiio and Hiby digital audio players, something like a hiby r1 nothing flashy but does the job they have some more expensive models but imo sub $80 is where its at
