Music is literally chemical warfare to your brain, also your conditioning yourself to have inappropriate feelings at the wrong time, you wonder why your so sullen speaking to your mother gf or family member at a joyous time but your listening to Nirvana Pop Punk Pixies or some other deeply melancholic music, you've been conditioned like palovs dogs

    Yooooo

the amount of time you can spend focusing on a single task without a reward is lowered by heavy internet use. thats what I meant

this seems anecdotally pretty obvious to me so I can't tell if you're disagreeing with the fact that I used the phrase "attention span" (which I agree is a pretty nebulous thing that can't necessarily be measured) or if you're disagreeing with my broader point

if its the latter, yes there is evidence to support this and I can link it if you want

The thing is that attention is very task dependent, something that keeps one person attention won't keep somebody elses attention. And if we're gonna talk about changes over time, well is it really that some construct that we would call "avg attention span" has decreased, or is it just that the our environment has changed? I wouldn't say there's any real conclusive evidence for the first.

    Definitely link me those tho

I'm saying if you become used to existing with constant reward, it becomes impossible to do difficult things without multi-tasking or getting distracted

music does affect your relationship to your reward system which is why your point about what areas of the brain process it doesnt apply

that doesnt mean music itself is to blame for these problems. its more about the way digital stimuli is consumed in general

Bro you're misreading this study tho, the causal relationship is in the opposite direction here. It's about how dopamine levels affect music listening habits, not the other way around.

Music increases dopamine levels, but that speaks for itself and isn't really anything groundbreaking.

I’ve quit listening to music for a month before.
Basically because I felt like I always needed some background noise or I’m feeling uncomfortable and that prevented me from sitting in complete silence and thinking clearly.

The biggest push was that my tinnitus got to a harsh level. I used to go to bed with that ringing killing my head. So I went for a month without pressing play on a song but then I got back to music when some good albums dropped like DONDA and CLB.

Did your tinnitus decrease over the month?

People tried to bring my religion into this. The message is purely secular. Listening to music is almost like brainwashing yourself so you need to be careful what you're listening to. Right now modern music is literally a vehicle of marketing

If you don't understand why this is important then it's your job to try and understand, nothing else to be said about it

To be honest, I don’t know
Because when a day is stressful or intense I hear it loud at night and If I exercise or play football I hear it loudly too

But on the other hand quitting earphones helped it 100%. Now I play my music on moderate volume on a speaker I barely blast it and I try to limit my earphone usage unless I got calls

To answer your question I think that environmental change has been the driving force behind a kind of neurological change

    pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26170005

This survey covers a lot of ground. I think the later section regarding "altered reward-processing and self-control mechanisms" is especially relevant to what we were talking about

Btw I agree that music = dopamine is pretty obvious but a different poster was disagreeing on that lol

Music also plays with your heart, the rhythms of your heart signal and guide you to appropriate judgement but music misguides you and leads you astray

You (we as a species) literally like music cuz of our own heart beat n hearing our mothers heartbeat in the womb lol

there are definitely sometimes issues of causation, the authors themselves point out that it could be the case that people prone to distractability/addiction/etc. simply use the internet more

the reason im skeptical of that is bc the authors also list several neuroimaging studies showing how internet usage does directly rewire the reward system

Sounds like a personal problem not a music problem

If casual music causes you to seriously act out in real life then thats a bigger issue then music & youre probably easily qffected by other forms of entertainment

Get help for your real root issues instead of looking for an escape goat

    Hope you work through it
