Pros:

Stops morons from influencing other morons

Cons:

Allows for the possibility of the government to impose greater influence on our information

Clearly this issue does not have a single correct answer, the decision must be made after weighing the qualitative values of its benefits and drawbacks

This isn't ideal, but is one of the few ways humans can create some form of structure and order.

From my perspective, the primary form of social media should only include fact-checked information, where people discuss topics cordially, articulately, and most importantly, demonstrate adequate background knowledge before making any statement.

Maybe there could be a secondary form, which is casual in nature, but collectively viewed as lesser than the primary.

Irregardless of ideology, the quality of content on most applications has plummeted (this post is based in personal observation, not fact).

I had my TikTok algorithm perfectly tuned but now I’m getting random bullshit Illuminati videos and right wing s***

I personally prefer to let idiots be idiots and believe what they want to believe.

If you’re stupid enough to believe everything you read on the internet without doing any sort of research and fact checking of your own then so be it.

I rather put more resources into pre school and elementary school programs so we can fix the problem at the root rather than try to control what content adults can see.

I don't actively use social media besides KTT2, have no Instagram/Facebook/Tinder/TikTok accounts.

But I can't say the same for the nearly ~5 billion people who do (forbes.com/advisor/business/social-media-statistics/#:~:text=In%202023%2C%20an%20estimated%204.9,record%204.9%20billion%20people%20globally.)

Education (or lack thereof) seems to be an important factor in this issue.

To clarify, do you think a higher quality of education would significantly help improve the quality of information and discourse on social media?

Anecdotally, I know many people who could be considered smart by conventional standards, but they are just as tightly wound to the dynamic of social media as others.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but do the majority of people on social media fact-check the information they have read? If not, wouldn't it be unfair to neglect this aspect?

This plays into the con I had stated. By making accessible information appear more credible by default, it can lead to doctoring of the truth.

What's more valuable to you? Higher quality central sources of information that are less likely to be questioned, or an abundance of low-quality information that people are equally likely to take seriously as passing it off?
