i'll obviously encourage my children to play sports and agree that they do all of the things you mention, but there's other things that do that too and to simply boil it down to sports is a little shallow.

well this is tricky because for a great portion of childhood kids don't really have freedom of choice. not just because they aren't smart or experienced enough to act in their best interest but because the law legally delegates their freedom of choice to their parent or guardian in most situations. it's on the parents to select what they think is best for their child up until early adolescence.
