Most number 1’s, grammy’s, AMA’s, records like hotline bling getting super bowl ad placement, Apple Music ads even,
His team works in unison with the label for all of these things. Disingenuous to act like the record label had nothing to do with these things.
I’d venture to say that NOW, the only difference would be that going indie would be more expensive, but that’s only because of what the record label has done for him for years
Okay I’m done lol
To this point,
And credit drake and his team for this, but most people don’t even realize the leg work that labels do for someone like drake.
In theory drake being big enough to go indie is true. But it’s far more expensive, and while he’d make more money indie he’d probably spend more too while having to do more legwork.
People think of drake as this mega act and it’s true, he is. But a lot of that perception is from years of leg work and conditioning from the label.
In 2020, labels still help. They just aren’t vocal and don’t have a voice. Without a label, so much more manual labor would have to be handled by drake and his team, and tbh even if he did go indie it would only be feasible because he’s spent YEARSSS benefitting off of the label and what it does for him
Labels handle so much.
Marketing, data a***ytics, scheduling, tours, media, project plans, etc.
I don’t think OVO is set up to take on all of these responsibilities right now.
Not saying they wont ever get there, but there’s so much that goes into an artist like Drake
label makes everything easier. u see how frank takes 9 months to ship out his vinyl and other merch? he probably got the best deal in the game. unlimited budget, big advances etc so why not sign a deal. he's got nothing to lose from it unlike smaller artist that are in bad contracts
Anyone that couches for a label is a sucker point blank. Labels been robbing artists since NWA days
It's essentially the music economy
Drake's product is feeding more than himself. UMG , Sony and Warner are pretty much music banks, and we all know someone like Drake brings in funds and attention to all the outlets they invest in for the other artist aswell
Who's givin' out this much return on investment?
After my run, man, how is that even a question?
There needs to be a larger conversation about the positives of signing to a label, like Rory was alluding to. They help small artists the most and even large ones like Gaga, Adele, P!nk, Drake, Rihanna, Grande, Beyonce etc.
The current "boogie man" label narrative is tired and inaccurate. Should labels adjust their contracts for newer artists? Yes. Are there other reforms that are needed in regards to artists mental health and show promotion? Of course. But that is still a pro-label argument.
In short, it would be in Drake's best interest to stick with the label.

And the cities he goes to as well...
I thought thread said if Drake went India, the music industry would be over
No cap tho if Drake makes a Punjabi song, the music industry is finished
