barko milicicJew here! What Whoopi said isn’t as bad as people are making out to be, but it’s still misinformed. Jews were and had been viewed as a race until the Holocaust mostly as a result of their displacement throughout history up until that point. To say the Holocaust was about “man’s evil” instead of the complete extermination of Jews (and other races/ethnicities) is just factually incorrect and complete erasure to the atrocities committed unto our people.

But yes myself and most of my other Jewish friends are quick to use “Jewish” as our first identifier. Some of us see it as a race, some of us just see it as our religion. But when speaking in the context of the holocaust, Jews should definitely be considered a “race”

She was informed that the Nazis viewed Jewish people as a different race, hence making their actions racially fueled. But isn't it agreed upon that they were wrong for having those views, like on top them generally committing those crimes against humanity?
As a black person, I need help understanding what was offensive about her pointing that out.
The simple answer is because they used to be more discriminated against (as in they'd be considered seperate from the whites) so it carried over unlike for the italians and irish.

That's not even getting into how someone from Africa would perceive me as well lol or how i look different than some who grew up in those environments
This is something that I've thought about too. I'm mixed (white mother, black father) and I am pretty fair-skinned. In America, I am considered Black by most, but I'm sure that if I were to go to Nigeria (my grandmother's home country), I would be considered white. It just goes to show that at the end of the day, "black" and "white" races are not based in biology, but in social systems.

Another Jewish person chiming in. She’s mostly wrong. Yes Judaism is a religion but there is a very real idea of the Jewish race.
Like I can see someone and immediately know they’re Jewish the same way I can see someone and know that they’re some other race. There’s definitely shared physical features and characteristics.
Another example is that I have plenty of Jewish friends who don’t really practice Judaism or follow it closely but they still consider themselves to be Jewish.
