Day 11: Vampire Weekend - Contra
I think I'm missing something here so I'm not gonna spit hate. I think this is just not my style, it's too sweet and happy and theater kid type music. It's like... bland and empty. Makes me feel nothing. It's like cookie cutter indie. Could be that I just didn't get it?
Some positives. I like the autotune on California English. I like the piano melody on Taxi Cab. I like that there are electronic synths and arps throughout I like the indie and electronic fusion. Edit: I think ur a contra is good especially the violin part. Fav song here.
The negatives are I don't really like his voice. I think the intro and his little screams on White Sky are annoying. I don't like the xylophone on Giving up the gun and I don't like the synth in the C part it made me wanna skip the song. I don't like how it sounds like a musical. I didn't enjoy diplomat's son but I admit it's ambitious.
If I wanted something with this vibe I'd listen to Harry Styles. I honestly think his albums are better.
Giving this the benefit of the doubt.
When we moving onto 2011? S*** has classics. You got Born this Way, Bon Iver, Nostalgia Ultra, Watch the Throne, and kjng of the lambs
I don't know if I'll do 2011, maybe after a little break because I'm aiming to do at least 25 albums
2011 is a great year tho

OP needs to actually hear more some S-tier s*** first and stop playing around

Like what?
I’m not sure if you’ll like my thoughts about Janelle either
I Day 12: Janelle Monáe - The ArchAndroid
I wish I liked it more. My thoughts about Janelle in general, she's a good singer, performer, actress, and a visionary. Because this is not a typical album especially not for a debut record.
Since this is a concept album I decided to read about the story a bit. This is a sequel to her EP Metropolis which came out a few years before. It's supposed to be "part 1" and this album is divided into "part 2" and "part 3". In the story, Janelle plays the role of Cindi an android, who came back in time to save the citizens of Metropolis. And androids here are supposed to represent minorities.
Listening to this you can tell there's a lot of thought put into it. It has a lot of different sounds and is created from a lot of different inspirations. Whether it's OutKast (since she is a part of the Dungeon family) on songs like Tightrope and Come Alive. Prince on some of these songs (and the album concept sounds like a Prince thing for sure). Even some Pink Floyd and progressive rock on a few of these songs.
This has a lot of songs that sound like baroque (like medieval theatrical music) and musical theater, which are not my favorites... it covers up most of the first half and the long outro Babopbyeya. There's definitely some soul in Janelle's performance so it spices it up but it's really not my thing and what keeps me from being into this album.
Luckily it picks up with the second half of the album which is more R&B focused with some indie and neo soul. Highlights like Neon Valley Street, Make the Bus, Wondaland, and the beautiful "Say You'll Go".
So this album got me conflicted. On one hand I appreciate the artistry, and it is impressive musically and conceptually. But on the other hand I'll never be in the mood for this and won't really play any of these songs out of the album's context.
Edit: Forgot to say this but as far as vocal talent alone this is the best album yet. She's hitting these notes well.
It lowkey terrifies me that MOTM 2 is becoming more relatable w age
i remember listening to it years ago just thinking "damn this is dark" but listening to it as i got older really made me appreciate the music more and relating to it made me re-evaluate life

GOODBYE @op U STINK
its mad how people get different things from music. VW one of my favourite bands and im sat here flabbergasted seeing things like ‘cookie cutter’, ‘harry styles’ and ‘empty’ being used to describe them
s***s crazy

Seen it this morning I think it's pretty fair, he didn't necessarily hate on it just said it wasn't for him
I could see her second album being one that he likes more
A big thing that he mentioned was the production sounding like theatre which is true and it's largely due to it being so story driven, down to the cover art being based on Metropolis by Fritz Lang

She hit the mark perfectly there. But he's gonna lose enjoyment if he's not really into it since it's such a big part of the album.
I would say this is still my favorite of 2010 next to Cosmogramma
Hope you're able to do this album as well @OP
Entirely produced by Toro, this was his first album and he was immediately labeled as "Chillwave" cause that was the era of bedroom producers and things like that but he never liked the label
He was always more influenced by Dilla (and indirectly flying lotus)

Heavy compression, tons of sampling, he's playing live instruments on this thing, very synth poppy as well and he's also singing. Incredible album
One of my favorites from 2010

1. I can’t please everybody and I wanted to write my real thoughts. I know ppl like these albums it’s why they recommended them. And I know I only react to them but I don’t think one more listen in the same day will make a difference.
2. I realize some of the scores feel low and might be misleading so I decided to delete all of them from the op and just specify which albums I loved. I think it would maybe make the thread more peaceful if it’s not about the scores.

I kinda spit this one out wildly lmao. Their 2013 album blows this out the water easily tho. But we can’t talk bout that and the lead singer is a douche smh
