Day 9: B.o.B Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray

Truly a relic of that time it's hard to believe at the time B.o.B was one of the biggest rising stars charting against rappers like Eminem, Wayne, Kanye, Nicki, Drake, Wiz, genuinely big names, and look where he is now...

It's also impressive how big name the features for this and Strange Clouds was. I remember just bumping all the singles from these two albums but never the albums themselves.

Listening to this whole thing obviously I get a lot of nostalgia from Airplanes and Nothing On You. Don't Let Me Fall is also a pretty good pop song. Magic really the only bad one from the singles. (but it's funny he got Weezer for this). And I wonder why "I'll Be In The Sky" is not in this standard version it's also a great pop rap song.

The album cuts is surprisingly half rap and half singing songs, styles like pop, rock, even country? B.o.B's singing voice is not bad and what knocks this album down is mostly the corny production and writing. Sometimes it has charm like in Ghost in the machine, probably the most "indie" song from this album. Sometimes it just straight up sucks like "Lovelier than you". Most of this album is basically a theater kid's idea of a rap album. It's basically Hamilton type beat.

My main compliment is that for a pop rap album is seems ambitious. Sure it's radio friendly music but he didn't have to experiment in all these different types of pop and didn't have to sing that much he could've just done the whole album like the Bruno Mars song but there's a vision here.

But honestly since the end result is not that good I think it's just pretty mid? as an album? If this was all Airplanes level it would be different story...

Day 10: Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager

I don't think I need to tell you how great this album is, but I'll try. This is peak performance, darkness, aesthetic, production, vision, personality, and most importantly a peak 2010 album. A theme that appears in every 2010 album so far is, they're all overproduced. But for this album it just hits different. This was just so different than anything at the time and being dark, over the top and dramatic just felt authentic for Cudi. Making this album about inner demons with horror themes, cool flows, catchy hooks, harmonies and production that goes into indie and alt rock sounds, with pretty much 3 intros and 3 amazing outros (All Along, Ghost! and Trapped in my mind).

I won't be surprised if this album put a lot of ppl into hip hop who wouldn't be originally. It's simple enough lyrically but with strong emotion and a subversion of genres as far as Cudi's performance on these songs and the production he chooses. The 2010 type songs here like Ashin Kutcher and Wild'n cuz I'm young still slap. Marijuana and Mojo So Dope are top tier songs to listen to while high. Mr. Rager is one of my favorite songs ever. Erase Me is nostalgia (despite the corny Kanye verse).

Really this whole album slaps today and stayed with me all these years. I think it has a lot of heart and one of the first "aesthetic" based rap albums that really worked. I think people who were looking for rap skills were disappointed by Cudi at the time. Or thought he was corny. Despite everything it passed the test of time. So many new rappers say their inspirations are MOTM and MOTM2.

Listening to it again actually made me realize this might be one of the best ever to me personally. 10/10

We need to restore the feeling..............

Still undeniably my fav "personal" album of all time.

I say personal, because despite Cudi's downspirals lately, this man put his whole soul on this record, and hearing him express his pain and angst, and relating to most of that album is just powerful. Love Cudi, this album got me through some dark times and still is today.

    Thanks Cudi :)
