MAYA is an incredible album
Her best imo
I think other than that I only listened to Matangi like once
Day 8: M.I.A. - ΛΛ Λ Y Λ
If I was a hipster in the year 2010 I wouldn't shut up about this album. This has just about any sound and any idea clashing into each other, hip hop, electronic, grime, punk, industrial, experimental, just her doing WTF she wanted. This being pre-Death Grips, pre-Yeezus, pre-SOPHIE is mind blowing. It's ahead of its time.
It's not without its flaws I'm not gonna act like I liked every single song but every song at least has edge and creativity to it. My highlights: Steppin up, Xxxo, Teqkilla, Lovalot, Born Free and Believe (from the deluxe I think).
This is like 2010's idea of a futuristic album and it still works. I'm not even sure if I get it yet but the idea of an album full of experiments and short songs is way more popular today than back then. And even though the technological references are like, YouTube, iPhone, iPad and s***, it's cool! It's like a time capsule to the future if that makes sense...
The lyrics are little nonsense but they're fun. The whole point is the mess and everything happening at once. I think a lot of ppl didn't get it at the time which is why you don't hear about it as much. I hope some of you will give it a shot. If you wanna hear some of the weirdest music (that also slaps) this is it. This is only a first listen but I'll keep this album in mind for sure.
don't forget to also check out the vicki leekx tape

Interesting I’m pretty sure someone mentioned that mixtape to me before
Didn’t know Bad Girls was an older song
curious to listen even if it’s not for this thread
Day 2: Katy Perry - Teenage Dream
Alright so this is a pretty straight forward easy to digest pop album... if you weren't following music in 2010 this is a glimpse to the good and bad of pop during that era.
Since half of this album is hit singles let's discuss them first.
Fireworks imo is the most undeniable, you can go ahead and call the lyrics corny and it's been overplayed on radio and on every movie... and yet it still slapped! I bumped my head, best song here hands down.
Teenage Dream and The One That Got Away are also really good songs, just fun and catchy and don't feel too much "of their time" instead they're just simple and still have appeal.
As for Last Friday Night, E.T. and California Gurls, all obviously nostalgic, but all have either corny lyrics that take me out of the song, corny vocals or an annoying part musically (like the end of Last Friday Night with that trumpet) that lowkey ruin them. That being said California Gurls slaps in an ironic way and the video (and this album's cover) is still pretty hot.
Now let's get into all the non-singles, which are all first time listens for me. So first of all it's impressive that there are so many huge hits coming off this album, but listening to the other songs they all also attempt to be hits but fall flat.
Peacock one of the most annoying songs I've heard in my life.
Circle the drain is the best out of the non singles and it's a nice pop rock cut.
The last leg of the album which is the more emotional sounding songs are pleasant enough to put in the background but enhance Katy's flaws... basic writing... off key singing... she doesn't really shine in this type of songs and I can't really get any kind of genuine emotion or personality from her. It's B disney teen movies songs. Which might be good for the intended tween fanbase that would listen to a Katy Perry album at this time. But nothing special a decade later.
Gud review
I remember buying this CD on a family vacation one time when i was a kid and we had it playing in the rental car and when Peacock came on my mom immediately shut it off lmao
What genre is it?
experimental electronic i guess, proto-vaporwave
its basically lo-fi slowed down 10-second loops of pop songs from the 80s and 90s
u might love it, u might hate it idk
Day 7: Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty
First some positives. One is that Big Boi is an underrated rapper and imo can rap just as good as Andre 3000. So the idea of a Big Boi solo should be as exciting as an Andre one. Two is that at this point Big Boi is a old head who's tapped in. He's experienced and takes his southern rap and funk influences and mixes them with the sound of 2010, over the top production, even a little bit of pop and indie.
On paper this should be a classic and this album was beloved at the time. Listening to the first few songs I was like how did we collectively forget about this album. Daddy Fat Sax makes you bump your head, Follow Us is an anthem, and Shutterbug definitely sounds dated but it's a lot of layers to this song and I bet you can make up a dope dance to go with this. Just makes you move.
However at some point this album just starts sounding dated as f*** and no longer in a flattering way. Now, this is still better than most albums during that time and still has a lot of personality, funk, soul and that "OutKast magic". I think what killed it is time and the attempt to make it as modern as possible. It's actually the more simple songs that hit the most like Shine Blockas which has an amazing beat and Gucci verse, and Fo Your Sorrows which could've fit right in on Speakerboxx (a compliment!).
I recommend playing this back during your next OutKast run. I don't think it's as good as their classics but the energy is here, the ambition is here, the soulfulness and hooks are here. What would make it better for me is just have more of Big Boi just killing it without all the bells and whistles, but I appreciate it for what it is and think it's pretty special.
this is a fair review the vonnegutt hook is ear piercing lol amongst some other features
i still treasure it though it's just sad that it stands as a massive finality rather than the transition to a great old head run that never took off, even if he had some gems later on
Just listened to Teflon Don for the 1st time ever, what an album. Instantly my favorite Ross

It's actually my favorite song I like how it sounds like this Fall Out Boy & rap mashup
And yeah too bad his albums didn't shine that much even though Run The Jewels filled that gap later
