MGK & TRIPPIE REDD - GENRE: SADBOY

The hate for this album is surprising because this is just a standard emo rap album. If you like Peep/XXX/Juice's music there's no reason to hate this. It's actually pretty catchy with good production and melodies and has its moment. Sure the lyrics are pretty shallow but this is not different than a lot of emo rap. This is actually one of the better Trippie albums I listened to at least it's short and to the point. mgk on this is not so bad, as long as he's doing emo rap and not SOAD covers he's fine by me.

Best: lost boys, beauty, half dead, no more, who do i call.

    Worst: struggles.

    OVERHATED/10

If that Astronaut in the Ocean guy ever dropped an album you should listen to that

  • mr get dough

The E.N.D was fully my peak with him bc i was in third grade and it was actually kinda cool

I really was longing for NERD but hadnt discovered them yet so that BEP album was the s*** at the time

Still love a few songs on it

People try to s*** on BEP because of the shift in early music but they have pop classics and would never have reached stadium status if they continued early sound. They would most likely have faded to obscurity so I ain't mad at them

Now playing souljaboytellem.com and I’ll explain myself

While it’s probably not hated as much today many of the “worst rap albums” list I saw online has it

It’s also one of the worst reviewed rap albums

Just for good measure I’ll listen and find out myself

It was hated at its time but it honestly isn’t trying to be anything special. What it is though is a unique style of ATL snap music built around youth culture at the time and can be seen as a precursor to Lil B who he would eventually collab with. If anything, a good takeaway from the album is Soulja Boy’s quirky production

The Sadboy EP isn’t that bad. It’s just maybe a few years too late and the generic/shallow themes just make it another one in a huge sea. Decent melodies and hooks on here. Agree with OP that Struggles is the worst track. Suddenly might be the best joint imo.

MGK isn’t anywhere near the worst white rapper and he’s always had a decent flow and a pretty good rap voice. I feel the Eminem beef made this “he’s one of the worst rappers ever” narrative perpetuate beyond any reasonable discussion.

My other reason is I wanted to review some albums from the 90’s and 2000’s and there aren’t a lot of memorable bad albums from these times. Either they got forgotten, got better in retrospect or albums I think people won’t care about if I name them itt (Lil Romeo / Nick Cannon for example, still considering though). I wanted to hear what was considered an outrageous album for that time.

Also it’s not as good as you think.

    SOULJA BOY TELL'EM - SOULJABOYTELLEM.COM

"Don't be mad cause the kids like me"

This album and the controversy surrounding it is around its mega hit "Crank That", this is basically the first viral hit ever as it blew a rapper to stardom and getting a major label deal just off of fans sharing it online and bringing it into real life.

It shocked people so much because at the time, it was somewhat against the values of hip hop, simplified, repetitive party music. Even mainstream rappers at the time had to have subject matter and rapping ability to gain a fanbase and even get themselves a debut album. Sure there were some bad albums but they weren't a huge success like this.

It's also important to point out the hate surrounding it might've had to do with ppl hating on snap/crunk music in general.

So is the album good? Is it a misunderstood classic? Not really. Except for the hits, the album is basically "Crank That" stretched to album length. With multiple songs even sampling or reusing lines from "Crank That" as hooks. "Crank That" was made on Garage Band so the other beats have to be (and half of them are ass).

There is no deeper meaning or theme to the lyrics whatsoever, it's just "I'm cool, I have style, deal with it". I think in today's standards for hip hop the lyrics sound better but the beats sound worse. I would describe the music as stupid. But it's fun. I think it's a fun guilty pleasure but not something I could consider good music. I don't think it would make people that mad today but it deserves respect for "ruining hip hop" just for being different.

Best: Crank That, Yahhh!, Report Card, Don't Get Mad.

Worst: Snap and Roll, Donk, Soulja Girl.

    FUN BAD/10

I think people just hate on MGK's personality. That's the only way to explain it bc his music isn't that bad.
