This album kicks off with Walk On Water, a heartbreaking song about writer's block and dealing with criticism. In this song, I related to Eminem, I was invested in this story. He basically told us, these songs are from the heart. So you want to give this album a chance. After all he did write Stan right?
Well... the problem is that the music is ASS. I'd describe this album as musically challenged. Many questionable musical decisions throughout this. The worst by far is any song sampling a classic rock song. These all suck and either sound like musical cancer or just make you want to listen to the original instead.
The second worst is Eminem's attempt at modern rapping. Stuff like Believe. Very annoying flows and straight yapping. When this style of music sounds best when it's simple.
The third worst is all the songs with sappy pop hooks. I like it a bit more because I like Recovery. Sometimes it's fun to hear a pop hook. But half of these are just corny and sound like movie soundtracks. This is while in late 2017 rap was at a commercial peak where a pop hook like this was already outdated.
In this album Eminem has a lot to say, going into politics and social opinions and into his relationship with his family. I think I could enjoy the message of these songs if the music wasn't so bad. It's just made in bad taste and sounds like a result of bad advice by out of touch label executives on how to make it sound radio friendly.
Also, this album is filled with terrible puns / one liners including "your booty is heavy duty like diarrhea", "she used to be my Gwen Stacy, despite her man" and "I’m swimmin’ in that Egyptian river, ’cause I’m in denial". I saw an interview with Eminem where he said he goes to the studio and writes every day. And I believe him!!! But that's just bad taste.
Eminem wrote Stan. And I believe he still has the writing and rapping chops in him. but as we can see good rapping and good intentions doesn't mean good album!! You have to have taste!!
Best: Walk On Water, River, Castle, Arose.
Worst: Believe, Remind Me, Heat, Offended, In My Head.
AWFUL/10
Revival is like the opposite from Total Xanarchy. Eminem has heart, talent, good intentions and cares about his craft. But the music is hot trash. And Lil Xan is a d***gy kid barely awake and carried by producers and a catchy sound and can barely justify his presence. You don't root for Xan. But I did root for Eminem. Which makes his s*** so much worse.

AWFUL/10
never really listened to this front to back and i guess i'm good if it stays this way
Ive since quit, but i listened to, i think, every notable rap album released in the 10's. Revival was the worst out of all the established names that full decade. Only the very end had something to it
btw can anyone post that song where it was like 3 white guys rapping about saving a rap game
I know this is very broad explanation, but you probably know what i'm talking about, 3(i guess) guys and it was quite a memed song, i just completely forgot what it was
Castle the only song on that turkey that doesn't make me want to put a cigarette out in my eye

nvm i actually found it

Arose
I remember Em stans liking this which is bizzare cause most of them had mixed reviews on his previous modern works (which I'd rate a lot better than Revival)

I don't really remember that tbh, most people on here were in agreement that it's some actual hot garbage; so when relatively mid Kamikaze dropped, Em stans were mostly rejoicing because it was just better, and then MTBMB kinda was considered good? I may be wrong though but that's how i remembered it
One of the worst periods of rap ever. I'd rather take ringtone rap over that s***.
Yeah it was weird cause I could see him happening today except he would be taken as he obviously is: a meme rapper. 2018 was a dark time because for some reason he was taken seriously.

Same I had to argue with a friend about it when it dropped, he loved it
Both are great!
