Ye was truly the first “Hip-Hop” artist to truly make genre less music. (Imo)

Like, people who don’t even f*** with rap respect the soundscapes & the quality of his work.

Kendrick now has the torch in the mainstream.

I'd argue it was delivery tbh but fairs

    That's fair too

he made me buy that damn nike dad hat

With Kanye, it was a way of keeping him in the convo without dismissing his legitimacy as a rapper outright because of the GOOD music sweatshop writing his rhymes. But that was all the ammo that vultures like Posty needed as a stepping stone.

Na. It was that ye would say “I’m not a rapper don’t compare me to other rappers. Compare me to Michael Jackson”

Especially when all they do is just make commercially pleasing music for the casuals and now they think they are "artists". It's pretty insulting to the musical artists who are not affraid to try out new and unique sounds and break the barrier even though it don't get popularized by the masses

That one fat ass thinks he is an artist because he made some radio hits but the listeners don't know his name at all. They can just sing the hook because it gets overplayed and catchy, and they have no idea who is behind the songs. They don't even sing his verses because it is just noise to them

Pop rap is all it is and there is nothing wrong with making that. Just stop being delusion and think you're some A-tier artist now because you blended rap with country

I think it’s just insulting to rappers, it’s okay to say you are a well trained rapper! I could give a f*** about “musical artists” whatever that means lol

why can’t what he made just fall under the growth of the rap genre in sound? why does it have to be genre less to gain attention from others when it comes to rap?

A lot of that was by design. During Late Registration Kanye said he was influenced by Fiona Apple and Portishead and even used Fiona’s producer Jon Brion for Late Registration. A lot of white hipsters ears perked up when that happened and things just snowballed from there.

But I don’t think Jon Brion would say they made genreless music. I think he would just say that they created amazing new soundscapes for the genre of rap

Kanye West happened and now everybody wants to be Kanye. You never heard this before lol

One could argue Andre 3000 subliminally started this wave by making The Love Below an R&B/Pop album in contrast to Big Boi's hip hop side(Speakerboxx) and refusing to drop a solo rap album.

She don't like no rapper, so I told her I'm a singer

  • Dec 9, 2025

To the OP though I think we’ve reached a zero point where music is not necessarily constrained to a singular sound/influence, so it’s almost implied that artists of all genres can use this to have more broad exposure. I just think specifically when it comes to hip hop, it’s seen as a slight like “oh I’m an artist not a rapper” well ok inherently rappers are artists so you’re basically making an unnecessary disclaimer and 99% of the time the reception is not going to be positive in hip hop circles

this is such an overstated take it almost makes you think if yall payed attention to anything pre-Kanye

the backpack/nerd s*** wasn’t the first entry into hip hop for all white ppl collectively Kanye isn’t that special

I’ll say specifically think it’s whack for someone like Post Malone who yes was a caricature (really like the pioneer of the white avatar) but someone I viewed as actually talented vocally at least…not only did he disown the genre that blew him up, but he switched up to the lack of commercial success while making what is probably my favorite project by him AUSTIN only to pivot AGAIN into weak ass pop country to be successful again it’s actually hilarious how shameless some of these people are

Jon Brion’s production and strings opened the door for Kanye’s “genreless” music. Jon was not a traditional hip-hop producer before working on Late Registration. Him incorporating his sound came from Kanye wanting to blend other genres and soundscapes into hip-hop. And I mentioned how things snowballed because Kanye went on to use Daft Punk (electronic) and other artists from different genres.

Yeah like it’s open season on how you feel about him as a culture vulture but it’s inarguable IMO the dude knows how to make catchy music there’s a reason he has a crazy amount of diamond records

Interesting tie in to Jon Brion working on Mac’s Circles too which feels like his furthest departure from hip hop

Not sure what the point of this reply is, you're posting things that are pretty obvious. Kanye is on record saying he used Jon Brion for Late Registration because he was a fan of his work with Fiona Apple along with achieving Portishead's soundscapes.

    ?

you said it opened the door to genreless music when these things were already part of the genre

it being jon or daft directly instead of 50s jazz or itallian opera samples or disco n house records doesnt change that

rap has always been fluid and "genreless" with these aspects

the only real difference imo, is the more live play some of LR has tho they are both still very much rap albums
