Also there is no such thing as alt rock anymore.
I always felt as though Alternative Rock was a means to classifying any form of rock music that wasn’t say The Beatles, Zeppelin, or anything that followed closely to rock roots or hair metal.

The Beatles themselves would be now considered an offshoot of “alternative” rock though.
The were experimenting with psychedelia and Indian sounds as they evolved.
Just think of it now, what is alternative rock alternative to these days.

Mumford and Sons is the most popular rock band of the last 10ish years along with Coldplay.
Both of them are “alternative rock” with pop leaning sensibilities.
Alternative rock was the diffusion from true Rock and Roll which no one makes anymore.
The entire term alt rock/indie rock is kinda idiosyncratic. It’s easier to use it’s sub genres such as grunge, emo, progressive rock to actually get a proper gauge of what genre it is.
