Probably a correlation on how important it is to you and your values. If your religion is determined how you live your life you should let them know that sooner than later to avoid issues

I dont know how you wouldnt have at least a very very basic idea of someones general belief unless youre going on a completely blind date. From social media to in person to interests etc. there will more than likely be at least a hint of whatever direction.
