Commercially? Jay-Z's success is more impressive imo
Jay-Z managed to be relevant from the 1990s to 2010s WITHOUT dying and getting a stimulus from that. He never had a peak as big because he didn't die, but he was still selling 500k first week in his late 40s.
If Jay-Z were to die he'd easily be as big as 2Pac legacy wise. It's just hard/unfair to compare people who died early to those who lived.
No way Jay Z would even be in the same realm if Tupac if he was alive
Tupac was active for only 5-6 years and had #1 hits on the Hot 100 and multiple classic movies, if he continued on that trajectory it wouldn’t even be comparable

Snoop Dogg was just as huge as 2Pac yet didn't last anywhere as long as Jay-Z. You don't know that to be true.
50 cent
Eminem
2pac
Weezy
Drake
I think Drake has to take a backseat to Snoop for right now but he’s up there.

Snoop Dogg didn’t even sustain any hype after his first album it was downhill from there, Tupac was growing with every album
"If Jay-Z were to die today it'd be a HUGE news event on par with MJ/Prince/etc's deaths"
Yes? He is a billionaire, married to Beyonce, has been relevant for over 20 years, and literally has the most longevity in Hip-Hop (the biggest genre in the world currently) for any artist currently alive.
It would be MUCH huger than 2Pac's death was in 1996.

Every artist who died early was 'growing still'. We'll never know for sure how they would've did truly down the long run, but also 2Pac was getting into too much law issues and those rappers don't last in the long run.
Em, Drake, Jay, Kanye, etc lasted over a decade because they weren't going to jail at the height of their careers.

2 BILLION people watched MJ's funeral
"It was speculated that over 2.5 billion people watched the live broadcast of the King of Pop's memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, 12 days after his death. But the figure is contested. According to reports 31.1 million viewers watched it live in America alone."
Yeah, I see it being bigger than Tupac's but it's blasphemous to say anything about him is on the level of MJ or even Prince.
I do agree he's one of the biggest hip hop stars to ever grace this earth, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

"speculated"
31 million people watched in America. I doubt it did 2.4 billion outside of America.
The point was it'd be similar to any true legend's death in music (MJ, Prince, Whitney, etc). It would impact EVERYONE and it'd be talked about for the rest of the year.
Again 2Pac didn't start getting most of this recognition or legacy until after he died. It's unfair to compare nor pretend 2Pac was anywhere near what Jay-Z was before he died.
Actually, I might have to place 50 above Kanye, although Kanye has a bigger career overall.
Nigga toured everywhere. Still think Em, Pac, Drake, and Snoop are more popular though.

MJ is one of the rare artists bigger worldwide than in the US. When he went on tour, there are places he performed that most of us in the US don't even know exist. He was that massive. People in Africa or South America who can't even afford to buy one of his CDs had a picture of him in their bedroom or could sing all the lyrics to a few of his songs.
Wasn't there a video of him and Bey at some museum and someone asked him who he was? Just 2 years ago, when he was on a so-called "sold out" stadium tour at the time?
Jay is a huge star but let's not overdo it. And it's stupid of you to slight Tupac for being bigger after his death, when it happens to every single star. I'd even blame MJ and Whitney's deaths for their streaming numbers being so high. Even a smaller artist like Aaliyah made most of her impact after she died as well.
Jay Z is huge but we over
Idc tbh, boring thing to talk about.
popularity and sales threads are the best goo

easiest way to make a hit thread outside of a drake beef title

Okay, so we agree Jay-Z being bigger before death and then becoming bigger if he died today makes him above 2Pac.
And I never said Jay-Z was as successful as Michael Jackson, so idk why you're bringing up how he was huge everywhere.
I said if Jay-Z died it'd be a humongous event in the media, and the only stars comparable would be A-list legends who also died early. It'd obviously be WAY bigger than a 2Pac, Juice, Pop Smoke, XXX, etc death.
