I don’t understand the people who dislike it for the exposition yet gas up other sci fi movies with insane exposition like The Matrix or Aliens

That’s not what stops it from being a 10/10 movie for me.

I think the Matt Damon part isn’t great. The book shelf “let me send you the solution to gravity” part is the main thing but it’s wonky. Anne hatheway is kind of lame in this. And then at the end he sees his daughter for 2 minutes before she tells him to kick rocks.

I’m not a hater, I re watched this recently and there’s some good stuff. I just don’t think it’s a 10 let alone the best film of a decade

I thought the Matt Damon stuff was excellent. It leads to some fantastic intensity (and a lead up to one of the greatest sci fi sequences in cinema) as well as a layer to the drama of the story about the limitations of man in its quest of endless discovery (the first time Coopers ambitions are ever truly shown to see a consequence from it)

I think while the book shelf stuff may be a bit wonky, I think the greatest sci fi movies often are wonky. I’d say the ending of 2001 is undeniably that in every way, it’s straight silliness to expect a wormhole sequence to look like music festival lighting essentially. I actually love that Nolan (who is often painfully obsessed with keeping things serious and grounded) decided to go for something less rooted in reality and truly take a leap of faith logically. It’s also thematically a beautiful sequence of the film: to connect such abstract scientific concepts with something so human. Making a connection from dad to daughter even though they’re literally in different dimensions is extremely touching and beautiful to me.

I never really had an issue with Hathaways character here. Even the love speech makes sense and is pretty pivotal for a film that up till then has been about scientists trying to reason what is happening to them through sheer scientific logic and then realizing how they’ve been wrong about everything until we get to that speech which is so seemingly anti science and ridiculous that even Cooper calls it out. It’s the kind of moment which would seem corny if you took it out of context but I think it’s perfectly done for that moment of the film.

As for the ending, that’s just life and since this is a very personal film to Nolan about how his own work often takes him away from family, I’d imagine it’s pretty intentional and bittersweet to have them only be together for that short time before they realize he is needed elsewhere.

Matt Damon part just felt, tonally, like we suddenly entered another movie. Like, ok, now we get the “space craziness” trope I guess.

not to mention that earlier in the film they brought him up to be this insanely brave man who got 11 other people to do this mission and how he sacrificed a lot and it turns out that Cooper was who sacrificed so much and ended up being the brilliant man by the end

I didn't really enjoy the Damon part either initially (maybe cause i didn't like the character being a complete coward). but the dichotomy of these two characters brought it fully together to me after a rewatch today.

I love both movies but saying the 2001 ending is wonky when it is 100 times as well thought out and way more logical than Interstellars is blasphemous
