The Neptunes send him a bunch of songs in 2001 but he rejected them all, the tracks ended up going to Usher and JT. Their sound just might not have been what he was looking for

mj was mad out of touch with what the public wanted and kept trying to go with the clunky robot beats instead of going back to his disco roots.

bootleg timbaland (darkchild) always sucked ass IMO

nah, teddy riley just pitched his vocals down.

and the song was being shopped to Aaron Carter. mj was taking aaron carter beats and passing on timberlake rejects.

never f***ed with that or shout.

The issue with Invincible is the pacing & structure of the songs. The first 3 are almost identical in structure.

There’s also the issue many fans feel in that it is overloaded with ballads & slower tempo songs.

I still like it, of course lol, but understand where these criticisms originate from.

Idk there’s conflicting stories, and the very few times MJ spoke in his deeper voice it really was that low

Literally trim the fat from that album and it would be more well received. Album gets overheated even though there were a lot worse pop records in the early 2000s

MJ casually rejecting Justified and Prince passing up on Frontin’ is wild, any other artists are running to hop on those records

Lowkey I feel like if Prince made frontin the song would be totally different in structure and everything lol probably wouldn’t even be a Hov verse

For real, why make an album full of heavily hip hop influenced beats but have no real hip hop producers??

Long ass post but stay with me on this one.

Very likely label politics. Invincible was released back in 2001 I believe and I don't think Sony and Epic were willing to leave the production of one of if not the greatest pop act of all time in the hands of relatively "new" mainly hip-hop producers.

The Neptunes didn't produce their first track for a primarily pop act until September 2001, just a month before Invincible. The song Slave 4 U by Britney Spears was originally produced for Janet Jackson too. Timbaland and The Neptunes were mostly producing hip-hop and R&B tracks, but didn't have that many pop placements prior so that could be a reason why Epic and Sony decided against either of them producing on Invincible.

Stupid as f*** of course, and I feel like they really should've just listened to Michael Jackson cause nobody would know what he wanted more than himself. But I remember in Pharrell's Drink Champs episode he said MJ was getting fed up with the songs the label were giving him and he wanted whatever The Neptunes were on.

Safe to say that after Invincible flopped critically, other labels learned that lesson, which is why we ended up getting Justin Timberlake's Justified album the very next year and it was packed with Neptunes and Timbaland production. Damn shame too, cause most of those songs were originally produced for MJ for Invincible. But from what I understand the label had other (stupid ass) plans

Nah MJ ain't pass on it lol he was the one specifically requesting The Neptunes but the label ended up not liking what was produced and they went with a different suite of producers instead.

I think Prince just passed on Frontin because he personally didn't feel like that was a track for him. He loved it though, but I think this was also around the time when Prince was tryna do more live funk and jazz production as we heard on albums like NEWS and Musicology.
