    Ain't top 10 for me

I feel he had one particularly strong style but unlike a number of other great producers, failed to have it translate as hip hop grew and he also failed to stay relevant after the 90s beyond some throwbacks here or there (such as the added scratches on Everything I Am)

hes done much more than the scratches on everything i am since the 90s

  • Aug 31, 2020

Yes, but he literally has 100 better beats than the one in the OP

  • Aug 31, 2020

    Yeah he's def up there

he actually evolved alot in the 80s/90s

i would say once he perfected his sound (goat sound) he stuck to it and thats the sound hes most known for

but thats not necessarily a bad thing

ah yes of course the "dusthead" argument

Mannie Fresh IMO has the greatest claim to be the GOAT producer based off of discography quantity, timelessness of work and lack of help

You gotta talk about Daz, Chad, danja, Scott storch, Yella, Mike Dean, the hitmen, etc. if you mention the typical names that come to mind when you start saying “GOAT producer”

Mannie did all that cash money s*** with just him and maybe a band

I’m not too knowledgeable on who all did three 6 beats like that but they up there too

definitely one of the most underrated

    Hasn’t made a classic beat since 2007.

    He’s not too 5 anymore.

Who cares when you have the amount of material he produced in the 90s

well thats what happens when you are a producer that is unable to evolve with the times

Pharrell, Madlib and Timbaland are just as old as Premier and nobody calls em dustheads cuz they are so versatile and were dominant in so many eras.

  • Aug 31, 2020

The answer is Timbaland. He's had hits in more genres that anyone on this list, he's versatile, and his sampling skill is second to NONE. Kanye can't even touch Timbo when it comes to samples. He also has a distinctive sound despite all his songs sounding different.

Also: Producer = Beatmaker. Pierre, Jetson, MurdaBeatz, and a lot of other new age "producers" just make the beat and send it. Being a producer is different. Being involved in the entire song creation process makes you a great producer.

See: Kanye forcing Jamie Foxx to sing on "Slow Jamz" because He's ear was built like that. That's just one example.

Premier's sound feels more like catch up and in the underground hip hop scene hes far from being an in demand producer anymore unlike a Madlib or Alchemist.

Pharrell is still 20 years later one of the most in demand producers in pop, hip hop, r&b, whatever and Timbaland has fallen to a degree but he is still requested to help on huge projects which is wild considering he been making hits since the 90s

    catching up to what?

youre fooling yourself if you think theres no demand for premier beats... there must be xxxx rappers who would die to rap over a premo beat

but yeah well the mainstream sound changed and the golden age sound kinda went underground

and timbo & pharrell were right there when the sound swifted

i dont care if todays rappers prefer them over premo. his prime joints are unmatched to this day

Preemos sound was and is so classic and important that to this day and age people f*** and ride with it, also the reason he didnt need to evolve, which is also the proof how much greater his sound is than any others producers whos sound aged liked milk and needed to 'evolve' because of that lol. He shaped huge part of the hiphop that
still lives and breathes extremely well through the culture even 30 years later..and his sound is 'hiphop' for the people.. all.. over.. the.. world, to this day.

To me its always subjective in terms of what you prefer. Like personally I would take hundreds of producers beats over Premo, many of whom are not even big names. But objectively, I think to judge a great producer is to see how impactful and versatile they have been and for how long. And Premo only truly was dominant in one era while Pharrell went from writing 40% of the hits on the radio to still being a viable hit maker and working on classics like Blonde or TPAB

and catching up to the current trends in underground rap, much of which has been progressed by producers like Alchemist and Madlib and Harry Fraud.

Even 9th Wonder produced a more forward thinking beat for Kendrick than anything Premo has in decades.

i think if you can list 100 beats over 1 premo beat then ur taste simply suxs

acting prhyme 1 wasnt one of the most hyped underground projects of the 2010s
