He has no deal.
Every release he licenses his project to universal for distribution. He can choose to pick another label or just distribute it himself
Drake has no contract with any label
Each album is a different deal then, still a deal
basically says what artists probably already know
that you can sign whatever deal you want when you're small, then take every thing back when you get big enough
the big artists that complain about masters probably do it just to influence public opinion
Most artists will never get big nor have longevity in the industry, unfortunately.
Lock thread. Mehn. Ask this s*** in the drake albun thread or something.
why?
The semantics of it being “under license” to Republic/Universal doesn’t make it a true independent release, it’s still major backed
it literally does make it a true independent release. independent means you own your music and do whatever you want with it, including (well, especially) licensing it out to the big boys
He kinda is independent same with cole. They work with labels, not for them
Yea but it’s something different, like a hybrid of major and independent. I’m not tryna take anything away from the amazing position they’re in but if you work with a major label in this way you’re not independent
I see “Universal” under the tracklist. Drake has a good contract. He’s not independent. Lock thread.
The label wouldn’t let him put two afrobeat songs on CLB. So still doesn’t have full creative control

You ok, this didnt make any sense
Universal are still making a lot money off Drake mate, you outta your mind if you think he’s “independent”
Independent music (often referred to as indie music or indie) is music produced independently from commercial record labels or their subsidiaries, a process that may include an autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. The term indie is sometimes used to describe a genre (such as indie rock and indie pop), and as a genre term, "indie" may include music that is not independently produced, and many independent music artists do not fall into a single, defined musical style or genre and create self-published music that can be categorized into diverse genres. The term ‘indie’ or ‘independent music’ can be traced back to as early as the 1920s after it was first used to reference independent film companies but was later used as a term to classify an independent band or record producer.

Being independent is especially about releasing music through major labels?
Drake is independent in the sense that he doesn’t have to depend on labels of course. But the word independent in this context has ALWAYS meant something that is done without a major label. Even if it’s just distribution you’re still a part of the major label system. Major label involvement=not independent it’s very simple

Nah I feel you I guess it depends on how you interpret it. They are independent in the sense that they own their music and can do whatever they want with it, but not totally independent because they still work with major labels to distribute it
He's independent and he still makes terrible music? idk that's pretty sad when u actually think about it
Doubt it man. Buying somebody elses Masters is pretty f***ed up
