i personally hated this previous generation. looking forward to the next but, hopefully there comes with some changes

EVERY SINGLE PLAYER AAA GAME WAS THE SAME

    third person
the same climbing/fake platforming where you never die and just hit X and forward
    walk to point on map
    clear enemies
retrieve something or walk somewhere trigger cutscene

ALL THE ROCKS AND MOUNTAINS LOOK THE SAME

its not even the same engine theyre using, like Unreal engine vs Decima is new and looks good, but STILL so why does everything look the same game to game?

    i blame Uncharted

amazing franchise 1-3 but that was for PS3! now every game copies the formula

everything is trying to push to being hyperrealism or photorealistic but that is just empty

    i want games!!

    metal gear solid 1
    crash bandicoot

like those 2 games are COMPLETELY different, and are classics

    now compare like

    jedi fallen order
    horizon zero dawn
    red dead redemption 2
    uncharted 4
    shadow of tomb raider
    assassins creed odyssey
even goddamn new GOD OF WAR

TELL ME THATS NOT ALL THE SAME GODDAMN GAME AND MECHANICS AND ENVIRONMENTS

i mean the graphics are beautiful but cmon
just with new lore and small chages in aesthetics
shout out to Horizon zero dawn for the robot dinosaurs, that was unique and an original wow aesthetic. the gameplay was BASIC THO!!!

even the NPCs all kinda look the same! could swap em between any game!!!

now you have like the FROM software games that are a little different, but tbh theyre graphcs/camera angle can be a bit PS2 ish!

and thats for GAMER gamers, not for casuals! reg folk dont be playin that s***

and there is like persona 5 but thats pretty NICHE

so thats why there was a rise in fortnite, apex, i guess cause single player got way to COPY AND PASTE

feels this gen was last gen but like "Pro" version, like they be calling gadgets these days

    thanks for listening

it wasnt, it just was to op lol even tho it was apart of the 3d platforming craze & ripped 2d elements from the generation prior

lets not forget about all the colorless fps games & open world s*** constantly being churned out all of ps3/360 gen too

or the constant out pour of jrpgs & 3rd person action games of the ps2/gc/ogxbox gen

people love to cherry pick every time there is a new gen tho & prop up nostalgia

  • coulda channelled this energy into collecting bugs for blathers b
now u hot n bothered and got nothin but this ugly thread to show for it

Was such a strange pick to label as completely different tbh. Even when nostalgia is the fuel, I feel like there's so many others from that era that would be better candidates haha

Why is RDR2 on that list? Rockstar went above and beyond to include gameplay mechanics (many unnecessary) that aren’t in many games including a lot of the games on that list. If anything RDR2 is a step forward in the right direction as far as world building goes. Now I do agree with a lot of the same s*** being recycled this past gen.

Every game is the same because that's what gamers want, gamers hate to be challenged or forced to learn new skills. The games that are poppin the most are the one with the most basic and recycled gameplay that anybody can master in few minutes and start playing with their friends. Most people tend to stay in their comfort zone when it comes to buying decisions, they’ll prefer the promise of limited satisfaction where they know what they are getting to the risk of disappointment with something new and so they’ll play safe.

As an enterprise who invest millions of dollars in the development of a game and expect to gain that money back why would you create a brand new original game with new mechanics and gameplay for it to flop or confuse the player when you can play it safe and release call of duty 232 or Fifa 2100 or make another fortnite, uncharted or COD like games and make millions.

there's nowhere for games to really go

you had the jump from 2d to 3d which was huge obviously, then from there either massive graphical advances, emergence of new genres, the ability to execute proper open worlds etc.

technology now really only facilitates relatively minute advances (diminishing returns etc.)

and with games being 8-9 figure investments now, there's no reason to take huge risks when the formula for printing money is tried and true

red dead is a beautiful looking game and the narrative is top class. the world is epic but it's really "just" an advancement on what has been done before (as opposed to some new innovation or whatever)

the gameplay (specifically movement and shooting) is average at best. the mission design is dated, at worst you can argue it is absolute dogshit.

i think it's an awesome game but definitely would not think it is an example of innovation/creativity

this makes sense though because i want to drop $60 on something i know im going to like. it's more an issue with the price of admission than anything else (then as you allude to in your second paragraph, being able to justify that price to a wide enough audience)

consumers can write off the $10 spent on a s***ty film. watching some garbage on netflix only costs you your time. games dont have the same luxury so i can see why risk-taking can be difficult

How is horizon zero dawn the same as RDR2 or Animal Crossing

I kinda agree with you but these are the worst exemples

People make fun of indies and act like they're lesser games but they're where all the outliers are now, not AAA franchises

Even there though it's mostly just new skins on retro side scrollers

  • May 12, 2020

What is there really to do though?

  • May 12, 2020

There are 2500 PS4 games there can only be so much variety in style

Sure a company can create a game where you go through the life as a tadpole into a frog but wtf wants that

i mean, is there any more that come from this type of genre? all the games in OP generally are action games
