Any suggestions on good work opportunities? You think freelancing might be a good start?

just put the fries in the bag bro

  • If money really isnt a problem for you then yeah why not? If you’re planning on making a return on the investment you could probably learn everything way cheaper

Been thinking of changing my career direction (currently a frontend developer) cause I'm not passionate about it. I enjoy web design/art in general a lot more and was wondering if it makes sense to go back to school to study UX design/Art/Graphic Design?

I know the salary is less and just as competitive, but I feel like it's better to be happy with a job I care about than a job that just makes me money and I'm not leveling up/looking for promotion. Also worried that if I ever get laid off, I may not have the skills to land a new job easily.

    Any thoughts?

Take an online course or learn through youtube, why pay thousands?

Art skills will not get you a good back up job vs working in retail.

You should get art skills to improve your front end work, get branding/marketing skills to upgrade your career, and use art as a hobby outside of your job.

Unless you are cracked out on improving and doing art for 9 months and ignore everything else in life, you will be fighting a losing battle against life-long artists

that’s IF you have the financial security to do that, let alone the self confidence

  • Just do it at home lol wtf

Yes, you can pay less for a trade school, or torrent tutorials and do the google ux program (free) to build a portfolio and use something like adp list for mentorship to figure out what you need and how to get better.

(My field is not tech nor am I or have done UX but someone I know did something similar to this and has a unrelated degree in psych)

Youre better off taking master classes and getting portfolio reviews at conventions while working on the side to make ends meet.
You’ll need to be at it for awhile and dedicate a lot of time to it. Like years and years. Get good references through networking. Find the RIGHT information. Theres a lot of information out there and very little of it is valuable.

Art school only helps if you have all this in place previously.

Instead of art school just do a basic college certification that’s a year or two to have some official papers under your belt.
Unless you live somewhere with free school or a lot of grants.

But the first part matters the most.

It is possible to make work but will require years and years of sacrifice and practise, just like any other skill. Im not sure about graphic design and UI and stuff, I dont do that, I do fine art in relation to film. But in film there are lots of opportunities if you meet the threshold of talent and have good references. Most people I know in film in this field do not have degrees in it.

Also layoffs and switching jobs are part and and parcel of the gig. But if you have the references and talent, there is a lot of opportunity in american film industry. They need a lot of people to work on these films/games. Again idk anything about graphic design or up or the other stuff.

Grad school in art, while also having limited use cases (unless you want to teach and even then there are lucrative teaching jobs for private film companies with no masters) are best if you have a few years of work experience to build your portfolio off.

Ive worked on films, graduating art school in a few weeks. I dont think many other people posting here have any experience in this field. I would filter out the advice to only people who work in the field.

    Probably not

In terms of social and cultural and class mobility

However I don’t know if your art world is like British film world aka unless you go to certain schools and know certain people you will never break in

  • You can get a UI job as a frontend dev why would you need a masters just exaggerate how much you used Figma and stuff

  • Ive met plenty of people who've done so, they are all unemployed

  • FKA Tadow

You don't need to goto grad school to learn UX design

You replaced the white women avis with a milk man, baby steps I suppose

With a art masters you can get a job at essentially any school place as a art teacher

Let me go check out the art thread. I draw too, but not on a industry level. It's more for a personal venture with me selling merch online and at cons.
