I remember Arcade Fire winning the AOTY Grammy
Jay-Z talking about Grizzly Bear
Lupe sampling Modest Mouse
Beyoncé interpolating Yeah Yeah Yeahs and AnCo
Kanye x Bon Iver collabs
indie doesn't have that type of pull these days? although niche, it seems like back then there was a place in the mainstream for this type of music
the only relevant white people music left is country (casual) and hyperpop (too online)
i know numbers arent everything but you look at the charts and the new MGMT album flopped like crazy!! they gave us Electric Feel

Huh?
Chappell Roan? Charli XcX? Billie Eilish?
I don't even like those artists but they are huge.

pop has always kinda been its own thing and transcends specific classification, it doesn't feel fair to call it relevant or irrelevant. like yes technically the vast majority of taylor swift's fans are white but its kind of its own thing within the pop sphere - pop relevancy is kinda separate from genre popularity

Pop music literally stands for Pop(ular) music, what are you talking about?

that's the point
If you agree with that premise then this doesn't make sense:

Kinda wrong...
Coworker music is still bumping regular radio pop hits like Sabrina with Maroon 5 and Coldplay still making hits on the radio for some reason

i'm going to edit the post because my point was for genres other than pop, pop/radio pop being popular is self-evident, its in the name

We're going to act like pop music isn't a vastly white dominated genre (same for rock music if we're keeping it a buck) ?

pop isnt really a holistic genre as much as its a classification for whats popular that spans relevancy in a time period. like yes pedantically to a degree, sure pop has its own characteristics that make people like it more than other genres (time signatures, production styles, etc) but its a widespanning term that is separated from specific categorized genres.
the popularity of pop is self-evident because its just whatever is popular at the time - 80s pop is not the same as 2020 pop, so trying to say if it is/isn't relevant for the point of comparing it to "indie" which is a highly specific classification doesn't make sense.

Well you could argue that “indie” is similar to pop that it wasn’t necessarily a highly specific classification, because the label started off as being “independent” and not on a major record. The fact that it has become a highly specific classification kind of answers the question in OP as why it’s not relevant anymore.
The indie label got hijacked by the major labels, divorcing the term from what it originated as, and instead of being a type of music free from mainstream culture it was just absorbed in and put into its own little lane.
