yeah crossover is what mostly what i mean, and yeah not denying that there are still some talented artists out there

i’d consider every one of those “legacy” acts (not legacy as in boomer acts but they came out 5+ years ago. not the best term to use but just to make my point rn it works) and not even indie really. not a bad thing just that they came out before the pandemic/tiktok industry complex/worsening of everything overall and have had immense success.
like i said in my post it’s kinda like what’s going on w rap where it’s this “class” ie the upcoming generation that seems to be getting drowned out completely. i know some pretty amazing artists/bands tryna make it work for example and there doesn’t seem to be a clear path forward anymore at all, and even if you do develop a fanbase thanks to streaming forget about making anything that looks like livable income
Will have to check out Been Stellar!
they’re signed to dirty hit and opened for Fontaines on their NA tour. They put out a great album last year and a great ep the year before that.

this is the song that got me into them
i consider him rap's 'middle class' next to jpegmafia, danny brown, earl, vince. underground (in terms of 'popularity') to me is dudes signed to him. in terms of distribution its anyone not releasing music under label system eg someone like wiki working on his own imprint. and i also put this distribution aspect as more dominant over abstract popularity
yeah the middle class is shrinking in every avenue of music and in the west in general

then you have an outdated idea of what indie is
then you have an outdated idea of what indie is
i don’t really think so but i can’t really agree or disagree if you don’t tell me what yours is
im going off the denotation and the historic cultural definition of the word here, don’t think that’s outdated. might not be what you consider to be indie but enlighten me please

i dont think an artist coming out pre pandemic makes them a legacy act i dont really get what u mean tbh

eh i shouldn’t have said “every one of them legacy acts” that was more shorthand for this idea that they’ve been around a long time and aren’t exactly the current “underclass”. everyone you mentioned came up in a completely different world to now, and even for some to each other (polachek with chairlift, the smile as radiohead etc)

sure i feel that but the whole point of a current underclass is they r the underclass right they arent established yet u could say that but like i think thats a dif convo than r people listening to indie and is it relevant, id say its relevant in a pocket like most subgenres rn
a few of those guys like boygenius, mk.gee, caroline polacheck and mount kimbie didnt really become proper names till like 2021-now id say their breakout years.

i mean idk how you define “breakout” but all four of those people you mentioned were getting put on and were/are signed to major labels or “middle” imprints. i don’t really wanna argue about this anyway it seems like we’re just on different pages and having different conversations and differing definitions for words

i know numbers arent everything but you look at the charts and the new MGMT album flopped like crazy!! they gave us Electric Feel
Great song and album but personally to me their 2nd album is a lot better.
