Spiritual rap has always been powerful. the spiritual overtones of lil wayne and the glimpses of spirituality in some of eminem's material have provided power.

kanye released a song called power about material excess and he got no power from it, and bowed to the expectations.

drake has carried the torch of "covet rap" from jay-z, rapping about what you have makes you better than the next rapper.

kanye has forged a new path

he let go of the trappings of covet rap to go 100% spiritual. however, like the rich man, who asked christ how he can attain heaven, kanye is found lacking. he feels he must be the billion dollar man so his extended family can live comfortably. however it is by releasing your possessions that christ tells the rich man is the path to attaining salvation.

kanye hopefully will undergo a deeper change that causes a gigantic religious record like creed, switchfoot, or reliant k.

many iconic artists have had conversions. dylan famously converted to evangelical christianity in the 80s and produced some very good religious material. the pop star who becomes a christian will face a very tough road.

kanye continues to innovate. drake throws sleight at kanye, yet it falls on deaf ears, if kanye is truly converted by the gospel.

kanye could kill covet rap and reinvigorate spiritual rap and rap in general if he continues on this path.

if kanye can keep his relationship to christ growing, then he can grow the rap world into a human endeavour, not an endeavour of material excess.

ps: f*** mcafee antivirus for interrupting me twice while trying to type this.

Op has a point. For this to happen tho his next album has to actually have hits and or more impact than his last two. Has to def be a “return to form”

kanye doesn't need "hits". kanye gets hits when he reduces his vision to brutal honesty.

I feel you. But for what you’re saying to actually happen the album has to have impact whether that’s in the form of billboard hits or the consensus being that it’s an amazing album

    Oblivion X

    Explain

they both had to make a big pivotal jump in the beginning if their respective careers to gain respect from the public (dylan performed covers and had to make the jump to writing his own music in a short amount of time, and ye going from producer to rapper)

they both changed the landscape of popular music in their respective times

they each have polarizing personalities that either turn people completely off or draw them in, and create polarizing music that does the same

dylan went through the same religious phase that ye is currently going through, and alienated a large part of his fanbase as a result, just like ye

there’s more, i wish i could find a post i made about it some months back that was way better. the main point im trying to make is that their arcs are much more similar than one would think

that means ye, dylan and bowie all had similarities in their careers
