there’s something about her voice and storytelling that reminds me a lot more of alanis morissette than lauryn hill.

it’s ultra confessional, and has a tinge of self pity a border lining bitterness that makes her a bit more grungey than her peers.

drew barrymore is a straight up dream pop classics, with its swirly chorus-drenched guitar strums

garden is damn near a postal service tracks goddamn those arpeggios do something to me

i can go on and on. by no means is SZA shying away from R&B. but it’s merely a fraction of the influences she’s interacting with and performing so f***ing beautifully all over that record. her earlier records too but Ctrl is pop perfection imo.

she really is so far beyond any of her peers in the music industry it’s insane. only ppl that come to mind are solange and twigs, but SZA is carving her own lane that speaks to youth like no other artist (except frank ocean maybe)

Great write up on a great album

Playing devil's advocate here but do you think that classifying artists who are clearly working within the R&B genre (like SZA), as being above or beyond R&B is disrespectful?

I'm just remembering an old interview from Kelela where she said that people labeling her music as "futuristic" R&B was actually annoying because it precisely suggested that R&B was never experimental when it always has been.

Obviously, SZA is influenced by various genres and she's talked a lot about her love for artists like Bjork, but Janet Jackson was also releasing experimental albums in the 80s and 90s and nobody questioned whether or not she was an R&B singer.

hmm that’s a very valid counter point i never considered !!! i think it goes to show that even tho my intent was to advocate for a black artist not to be labeled, i was really disrespect an authentic part of her influence.

great reference to kelela interview, you got me there. i kinda got my disdain for the r&b label from this twigs interview theguardian.com/music/2014/aug/09/fka-twigs-two-weeks-lp1

i stand by what i said but i def was disrespectful and wrong in saying she’s “above” r&b

Yeah, it's an interesting convo for sure. And the Kelela interview is here: thecrimson.com/article/2018/2/24/kelela-interview she said, "So the subtext any time someone puts “innovative” in front of R&B is that people think of R&B as basic. And I think that it’s essentially racist..."

I definitely see where twigs is coming from, too. Her work is electronic, with some underlying R&B influences (Janet, Aaliyah), but it isn't overtly R&B like Solange or SZA, for instance. I think "alternative R&B" is an imperfect term but it's helpful to separate the artists incorporating a lot of other musical influences from those who are more traditional or straightforward in their approach.

Hell, even after knowing what FKA Twigs looks like I wouldn't label it as RnB She raises a good point, the hymn like vocals and electronic aspects of her music would be the focus if she was white. Lana Del Rey would probably be labelled RnB if she was black. This what Tyler was getting at too, our obsession with categorizing things into genres may do more harm than good
