Data shows that 70% of all music consumed in 2021, was old music (released 18 months ago or prior).

The US Billboard 200 album chart shows that 88 are hiphop albums

of those 58 are older albums and only 30 of those albums are new

why is this ya think? 🤔

feels kinda weird to refer to music from 18 months ago as "old"

i wonder what the stats would be with a different cutoff point for old

remove radio play from the numbers and there would be more new stuff on the charts

(I never listen to the radio but I assume they just play old s*** or s*** paid by labels)

the majority of new music has a spike in listenership the month it comes out and then a steep decline. Old music already has devoted fans. The average fan of an album like Take Care, 17 by XXX, Good Kid, Maad City has already listened to it for years. so it's much more appealing to them than checking out a new Yeat album or something.
    In other words...
    Only Real Music's Gonna Last.
    All that other bullshit?

This, but I would add this point, I think all the artists from the 2000s and the early to mid 2010s are selling more than the artists that we have right now. And Olivia Rodrigo doesn't count, she just had the Disney machine behind her.

It's almost like there's way more music released before 2021 than in last 18 months

Also right now, we don't have any iconic artists that could really the faces of this new generation. X could've been the face, but he got killed when he was just getting started.

Honestly, the only person I think is possibly the face of this generation overall so far is Doja Cat, because she's so versatile to the point that she's truly the IT girl, and it's hilarious because she hasn't even gone Gold yet

We're also living in the age where music is more oversaturated than ever, there's literally music for pretty much everyone.
