Y’all also attribute everything to social media/the internet without doing much research. Groupthink(and similar principles) has always been a psychological phenomena and is basically embedded into our behavior

The internet and social media prey specifically upon these deep primal instincts that you speak of. And they do it to a degree that is utterly unprecedented.

Care to give a few examples for me?

Genetic expression and their implications on our behavior. Twins separated at birth studies is a decent place to start

This is true but algorithms take what you the individual give it and recommends more. If your already left leaning your content consumption is gonna reflect that so is the algorithm

That's exactly what I mean when I say they prey upon these instincts tho.

I also disagree with this. The most terrible examples of ‘groupthink’ or even propaganda occurred way before the internet... think Holocaust, Salem witch trials etc. If anything the internet makes it easier to find the opposing views/facts. Groupthink is most common and powerful when a group is highly cohesive, isolated, stressed... which are conditions the internet vastly eliminates

You make great points but I'm not strictly referring to outcomes but rather how the medium is used currently. Like naturally the printing press being well established by the time the witch trials happened meant that at that time, propaganda and such could be distributed to a degree never before seen. It didn't culminate in a tragedy until the trials perhaps, but the effects were being felt beforehand.

So now we come to the present day and the internet is having more of an impact on the way we think and act than any medium (such as printed paper) has ever before. Sure, nothing bad has happened yet that could be directly connected as "hey, the internet led to this" but it sure seems like it won't take 200 years of internet access to lead to some modern day witch trial equivalent.

I submit that in some cases the internet even encourages groupthink.

Plus the internet literally changes your neurology and brain chemistry. The effects of the internet cannot be overstated.

Yes, you can even see it in effect in KTT. Why I don't participate in release threads until after my first listen, because those bad vibes will ruin your perception of the album.

    You are not wrong!

Yeah but imo social media makes it worse given how easy it is to access people who share the same opinion as you. Pre social media if you believed something but none of your friends/family believed it you probably would keep it moving. Social media offers the paradise of confirmation bias daily with new information daily. This could take you from just believing something to radicalizing you

  • Yes considering the internet let's you live in a echo chamber more than ever before. An idiot can say something on social media, and as long as someone agrees he'll be assured in what he's saying.
