Is this the epitome of faux-intellectualism or is it truly a masterpiece?
Whats yall take?
I don’t believe there’s such a thing as pretension in art
That’s an interesting concept
it's f***ing stupid pretentiousness. imagine paying to see an orchestra or some s*** and they just sit there in silence for four and a half minutes

As art yea i can definitely understand what John Cage was trying to do but then theres youtube videos of people actually performing the piece and it just straight up looks ridiculous
nah it's fascinating, really made me think of music in a different way
like when I'm stoned as f*** I can just listen to the sounds of cars coming by and think 'this is music'. I can get hypnotized by the sounds of traffic, nature, whatever. 4 33 made me think of sound like that.
call me pretentious but idgaf

he is so much more than 4 33 too =(
This idea of “faux-intellectualism” or “fake deep” or “pseudo intellectual” is very bad for open minded and comprehensive discussions
Philosophy and the study of the psychology is all subjective. It’s open to however many interpretations you want that’s the point
Sharing information with others and discussing, a***yzing and reflecting

I can understand where you're coming from. However, has it not happened to you where an individual has said something that they proclaim is "deep" and they think themselves so intelligent because if it, yet its like basic entry level knowledge? This i would say is a "pseudo-intellectual"
unless im getting trolled
nah I was genuinely mixing them up, doh!
I need to check out John Cage outside of 4 33 if you got any recs
I'm performing it right now

why are you gatekeeping knowledge? 99% of the time its people excited about something new that they learned, it might come across as obnoxious but thats what literally every single person on earth does, just don't mention it if you know whats up you'll look smarter

You're contradicting yourself if it's open to interpretation than even the critiques hold merit. I for one think that there most certainly is pretension when it comes to art. It is reached when ambition isn't drawn from purely artistic means.

Not gatekeeping just pointing out that its annoying when people say theyre so smart for something basic.
You can tell the difference between someone who is genuinely curious and learning vs someone close minded who sticks to what they know and thinks themselves so smart because of it

it's like the cliche 'the more you learn to more you realise you don't know'. often when I learn something I feel stupider for having not knowing something before. and that's okay, I think.
You wanna talk about pretentiousness? You ever heard of the philosophy behind the black metal band Liturgy??
