Man this is America we are talking about

  • Apr 6, 2020

yea i dont think so. that nyt article just basically sez some celebrities are tone deaf, some less so (these are things that have been known, acknowledged, and re-acknowledged for years). and somehow that means that.... celebrity "culture" is burning?

tbh that's a really poorly conceived nyt article. i'm surprised

    No

Some people will always find it easier to obsess about others in order to escape their own reality. Hence the popularity of reality television and those dumbass luxury vlogs that somehow became core YouTube

Dudes do it on here all the time with artists. I know because I used to be one of those dudes. Till I realized regardless if drake and Kanye are really beefing or not that none of that calabasas chronicles s*** is benefiting me personally so why even bother

  • Apr 6, 2020

    Of course not

Rich and famous people will always exist in one form or another, and by virtue of their wealth and fame they will have some influence

  • Apr 6, 2020

I think influencers have always existed in some capacity of civilization, so nah.

    No.

In America celebrities have been a thing since George Washington.

That s*** will never go away.

Good thread Op, I especially like the second article.

I think the problem is mostly content: the rehearsed, superficial, platitudinous, PR-scripted, beautiful soul, ‘deep thinking’ humanitarianism that celebrities present in times of crises a lot of people find infuriating, and I’m among them.

Personally, I just want to watch somebody that’s CHILL who can talk about things in a non-superior, non-conscending way, or just be funny and random or give me their take on things without a desperate need for approval or caring what I think or whether they’re saying the right thing at the right time.

If there’s backlash I know it’s not against the random influencer who is chill and is just trying to navigate life during this weird time. It’s definitely against the more ‘desperate’ sort of celebrity that, in a more cynical light, you could say is trying to steal attention away from the pandemic, to gain some social capital from it.

I don’t think authenticity is being punished because such people do not contain authenticity. They probably haven’t done something spontaneous since they were children. They are a mirage, a brand, an empty monogrammed box.

Influencers (or influenzas) aren’t going anywhere. This is such an interesting topic. Would love to see more responses.
