    Nah bro

Artists do get extorted which is why they need to be with the s***s or with the goons if they dont wanna pay up

But these calculations are way off

Lil Pump blew up off a soundcloud song and video that cost him 200 dollars total. His career cost him next to nothing til that point

Tons of rappers blew without any criminal background

LMAO f*** no. This is just wrong. I say this factually, it's wrong.

Tons of rappers did not "blow" without a criminal background, and blowing is subjective.

Can you get a lil local buzz without crazy dough? Maybe. But you're not having a real career to live off of without real PR, publicist, management, etc. and that cost a lot of dough

You definitely don't have to be a criminal or a thug to follow your passion what the hell?

Why people always making excuses for s*** like this?

countless artists broke out with just a mic and good branding. Like Travis... unless they’re talking mainstream mainstream.

    No they didn't lol

The fact that people think this lets you know how good their people are at conditioning and branding.

Bro is washed in every aspect

Terrible name, no style, bad sound, bad image all around. Throwing $150,000 to "build" a brand like that legit is just burning money. Especially if he's trying to be a rapper.

You have to sell something people want. Identify your audience, craft your product and start selling. Money opens doors, but you need a decent product to begin with.

Doesn't help when you're pompous and lacking self awareness like him.

    Yes and no

Their have been rappers that had the machine behind them to blow up and they do but sometimes they don't.

It's all about connections and getting your song out there, but I'm sure their have been unsigned rappers who have gotten lucky off memes and had their song blow up from there.

There are a few! But not many.

Even memes and songs blowing up on social media cost

They make you think they independent for that organic feel

I mean some of those guys had distribution deals, but it wasn't like they had a bankroll. Most guys when they start off gotta get money from somewhere or go full DIY aesthetic or get their community to make stuff for them.

all it takes is a cell phone, a laptop, and talent. a lot of people have the first two. but Clairo has more of the last one in her pinky toe than most people have in their entire body

okat now I know you're trolling

You can just end up broke and in astronomical debt.

Yes which is why if you have enough bread to fund your music career you should probably do something else 😂

This exactly. It's sad, because smaller local musicians used to be able to make a living for themselves but now if you're not one of the top few hundred artists on earth you're fighting for scraps

I think with good music, you can do it for less than that. Probably still need 10-20k though with smart investments

    Nope

i feel like @op is talking about street rappers like NLE, YB etc. You need studio time, advertising, beats, MV shoots etc. to even get your name out there.

tyler had like 10 projects before he had any sort of buzz, but X is a good example of the internet blowing an artist up, its happening with ssgkobe & sofaygo rn

Nope I'm talking about everyone not just street rappers.

Tyler is fortunate. He came from LA, went to a popular HS, friends were talented,

if you are popular in LA that's totally different but even that literally cost. Music videos aren't cheap, wearing the s*** he wore / wears not cheap, management not cheap, etc.

yeah. I used to be one of those folks who thought you could just drop something and then it takes off organically. it's still possible (very rare) but even after it takes off organically, then you'll have tons of offers to put $ behind it to get it to the next level

I don't want to be absolute about this.

    it could happen.

But it's far more likely that the people you see it happening to, are lying about the extent of the organic ness of it all.

From follower count, to memes, you would be better served just assuming that there's some level of inorganicness going on with everything you see.

Man we really be putting up our own barriers. There are literally hundreds of artist, if not thousands who did not have to put up 150k to become artist hahahaha this s*** is f***ing stupid bro what’s wrong with us?!?!? Niggas really think they gotta ask The Godfather for a favor in an era where niggas are literally dropping one song on Tik tok and blowing up in a week. You can literally live a comfortable life with just 10k dedicated fans like stop this s***. You don’t need to be drake or put up 100k to become an artist.

The idea that people can just drop a hot record on tik Tok and it just 'blows up' tells you everything you need to know about the business tbh

It don't work like that lol

It is very hard to make a living as a rapper if you don't have money to start your career. It's almost impossible.
