  • 2010s was the last era of rap superstars. Their wont be another wave of the drake, Kendrick, Cole, rocky tier stars. Closest thing right now is Playboi Carti but even he s not really new. 2020 on plus artist wont pop off to anyone other than teenager/early 20s people on social media.

Albums arent the same thing they used to be, most people here clips of songs on tik toks or social media and that's the extent of hit songs now.

Niggas clown lyricism like thats not what fueled the mainstream 1994-2015 lol. That’s it, outside of monoculture dying in general (which Sabrina Carpenter, pinkpantheress, olivia rodrigo, tyla, chappelle roan, etc have to also compete with and are doing pretty good) that’s the root of the problem.

Pink pantheress wasnt made in some label lab but she fundamentally understands how to give her genre/demographic meat and potatoes s*** that sticks to her fans bones even in her eccentricity. Most mainstream adjacent rappers just make 15 cool songs with no deeper themes or connectivity

    Think rap just peaked lol

We have those personalities you speak of but the #powersthatbe dont put them in the algorithms the same way we do a new personality in pop. It’s interesting really.

numbers talk. Leon Thomas Mutt Billboard #35 yet he a Grammy winner on a 48 city USA/EU tour 🥀

Elton John (the legend right?) only had 3 years as a chart topper btw and could barely chart in his own country. rest of the time he was doing the number above. I hate numbers talk man and the fact it’s become the only mark

Not a fan of him ngl the dope musicality contradicts these lyrics of his

  • Because no new mf is any good. Carti gets hyped by teenagers and Gen Z but 80% of his music is literally unlistenable garbage. New rappers try to be edge lords instead of just making good music.

Honestly that "rage" movement was the beginning of the end. The new dudes are just makin bullshit that niggas do not actually wanna hear but labels already invested in them. So there's basically a logjam of WLR-type rappers who no one cares about.

  • raps

Because everytime you bring up that most aspiring new niggas can’t fundamentally rap you get called an old hating ass nigga for thinking the future of rap doesn’t involve cosplay of Keef Thug Future Carti from 5-10 years ago. The average corner nigga from like a nappy braids Meek Mill freestyle type video (who were tryna take after Cassidy Beans Free Fab etc) were so much better than the average aspiring rapper today who just spams simple ass post Thug and Migos esque punchlines “i ball like (NBA player)” “i ___ like (overdone movie or cartoon reference)” rap is a hustle and just another aspect of people’s brand now

Wayne into thug future keef carti is the turning point. Niggas have no reason to care like that now

Yea, it’s undeniable. Street rappers still used to have more respect for the game. Meek was a great battle rapper. Record execs like Birdman had Wayne working on writing lyrics every day as a youngin.

Even beyond the Big 3, we had so many others like Wale, Krit, etc. Even weed rappers like Currensy and Wiz take their craft more seriously.

I flip through a playlist of the most popular young rappers and it feels almost comical sadly. So fans are sticking with the Big 3 and co still because there are not really young replacements. And the Big 3 themselves are moving to middle age and not dropping retirement albums like previous generations. They know it too.

Yeah, Michael was based on YB's life.

I don’t agree. Fans gave execs no choice but to support our favorite rappers. When the Big 3 dropped mixtapes / early albums, there was so much support that they had to invest in them because it was clear fans were obsessed with them already.

Lil Tecca for example just isn’t doing that to the same degree.

Mixtapes coming back might help somewhat, rappers are forced to basically drop albums now right off the back vs rappers would drop many mixtapes to build up hype for debut albums.

    Streaming killed the mixtape yeah

  • I thought about this the other day.

I think the internet gives an avenue for older consumers and artists alike to have more longevity in interest in their favorite artists and staying power/exposure for those artists as they age, respectively. Almost moving the "prime" age up in a sense compared to 20 years ago.

Streaming killed the need of a mixtape especially since soundcloud is #compromised (shoutout to smino for trying)

I don’t think it killed the need, it just killed them.

Mixtapes allowed rappers to build up more hype with less funding without going to majors. And they could be more creative. I remember when Flatbush Zombies pit their mixtape in streaming after a while, it was difficult because of all the sample clearing having to be done. They didn’t worry about that before really.
