idk wen drake fans dropped the bar so low for themselves. s*** wasnt even good against his own catalogue
The slide started around Views/More Life. By CLB they were calling any random bullshit he dropped classic
ABSOLUTELY.
we know
Meanwhile Kendrick fans are still calling every album classic usually, not acknowledging he has yet to eclipse GKMC, TPAB and the steep drop off in his lyrics on GNX
yea they a lil delulu as well but the whole "calling an album classic within a year of release" s*** is applicable to every stanbase and indicative of a larger problem w music discussion
but for how divisive a work it was, at least big steppers saw kendrick challenging himself (re: subject matter) as a rap persona whereas iceman just felt like more of the same/70 minutes of anti-introspection cope over trendy yet uninspired production. disagree about gnx nor do i think lyrical dexterity was the sole intent of said album
You still had Piñata, TPAB, Atrocity Exhibition, Swimming, Undun, DS2, Monster, Barter 6, Tetsuo & Youth, 4:44, we got it from here, Rodeo, Astroworld, Die Lit, Faces, Take Care, IYRTITL, etc
Nothing in the 2020s stacks up to those projects
Half of those projects if not more are from artists of the previous gen anyways, not even new cats, 2-3 Drake albums, future, Hov
Which kind of brings up what @retro_77 made a thread on how people still expect rappers who’ve been in the game 10+ to carry the game like their newcomers and still get some of the blame when mainstream is “flopping”
And even something like Die Lit didn’t even sell “well” in comparison to other hot albums out, most of that hype came post its release as carti’s cult following grew
Two of the greatest rap albums of all time does not characterize the whole era of the 2010’s imo
Rappers were not dropping albums like GKMC and MBDTF in that time frame outside of Drake and MAYBE one or two others
Absolutely generational projects were released from 2008-2015 but let’s not act like
a) everything was timeless
b) GKMC and MBDTF were the average examples of what we’re trying to describe
In terms of quality or the universal acclaim those projects got? If you’re looking for the latter, that’s never coming back again lol
Exactly
There was classics dropping left & right in the 2010s dude
I’m not denying that but the dudes post is like “why hasn’t anyone topped illmatic?”

Every single album in this post is better than every album mentioned in OP btw

Bro said the best movies are Jurassic Park and Star Wars and nobody else had the sauce back then
While GNX and Iceman are both highly contextual records that came from a specific set of circumstances, hypothetically if you made a grid like that for the best rap albums of 2015-2016, there would be no room available for either of them. They aren't that good.
Bad bunny album >>>>>>>>>> chance >>>> iceman

Only two projects he mentioned aren't from artists of that actual decade
444 and Undun, maybe 3 if you count Lupe
Def not half

Where is the lyric dropoff when you have stuff like Whaccked Out Murals, Man of the Garden, Reincarnated, Heart 6 and Gloria that are "traditional" Rappiy Kendrick then Hey Now and TV Off which is stunting while barring up
Then Squabble Up, Luther & Dodger which are obviously street, Radio & cookout singles
Or are you one of the those people that still don't know that ish like "bing bop boom", "peekaboo" and "turn his TV off" are literally Weston Coast slang, or even worst, one of those people that think Kendrick can never make a more relaxed song even tho every album of his literally a quart to half of it have always had those songs even on his most heavy projects TPAB, UU & MMBS

He should've had Lil Yachty write GNX. We're all in agreement there.

Oh my fault that one didn't register in my head since it was the only one not capitalized
Overall point of mine still stands tho imo, and there's way more projects than those that were gigantic and impactful of era and a good amount of them that still are
