Truly the weakest of the nu metal Big 3
I don’t think they have a single album I can just let play front-to-back.
Who are the big 3 to you? I feel like it has to be Korn and Limp Bizkit but then the third spot gets harder to pin down because it gets into bands that a.) really don’t like being considered nu-metal and b.) have fans who really don’t like those bands being considered nu-metal (Deftones, Slipknot, System of a Down, etc.).

I think of it as Korn/Bizkit/SOAD, but I could also see Korn/Bizkit/Linkin Park as valid. Honestly don't understand why Deftones are always called nu metal, but I barely listen to em so maybe I'm missing the obvious
Slipknot was always just metal to me, almost like pop metal? But they never had the rap/funk influence that felt necessary to nu metal

I forget that in the moment, like as those first two albums were coming out, I didn’t consider Slipknot nu-metal. It feels like having a DJ should automatically qualify them but they are kind of pop metal? They’re still really aggressive and utilize tricks from different subgenres of metal but everything since Iowa has felt pretty hooky overall.
I feel like Linkin Park just stopped being a rock band altogether after a certain point. Their biggest stuff falls into the category of nu-metal but it’s also something they eventually grew out of (although it felt more like an Incubus “I wanna wear a suit jacket and be taken seriously like those indie bands” kinda thing).
Deftones are nu-metal by association. I think they get lumped in because they were friends with nu-metal bands but they’re damn near in Faith No More forefather territory. They were definitely the most influential contemporary band on that genre.

Goddamn bro I forgot that Slipknot had a DJ 🤦♂️ they're definitely in the Big 3 over SOAD then, you're making excellent points
my hottest take is prob that hip hop as a genre has a massive issue with songwriting quality. it's bizarre that for a genre that is so densely grounded in lyrics and writing that there's very few songs that can actually compete lyrically with what's generally considered the best songwriter music.
for the record i'm not saying that songs in rap are badly written or unemotional or anything, obv thats not true, but it's bizarre that for a genre which partially was influenced by literal poetry movements that the OG block party origins still bear a greater influence even in actual serious/moving/emotional music than the former
The first Korn album is f***ing terrible even by nu-metal standards.
The album opens up with Blind so by default ur wrong
Kendrick Lamar is the worst hook writer of all time.
50 Cent is the greatest hook writer of all time.
808s ruined hip hop (the drum not the album)
But they used 808’s in the 90’s right?
Rap and rock are usually oil and water. Almost every attempt to combine the two has resulted in an unsalvageable product.
I see this and I raise you Faith No More's first 4 albums
Cloud rap contributed to the popularity of huge blown out 808s in hip hop, but not much else. Like I'm sorry but if anyone started of their song with some grimy sounding Nirvana-esque guitar line with a series of "yuh's" today it would be considered corny af. S*** was considered fire in 2017 though.

S*** sounds like a demo. The little jam part at the end is cool but I’ll take any live version of “Blind” over the studio one.

Yes, but the over reliance for the past 10 years has made hip hop production too samey and meh. There are still great beats but less memorable imo

Ok I see what you mean. Yeah I kind of like when the 808 doesn’t hit all the time and it’s just the kick but when the 808 comes in man it’s so f***ing mean. I think the best example is what happened to that boy by Birdman
Wale should’ve never signed to Rick Ross and grew out his hair. Should’ve kept doing the backpack, hipster rap thing
