honestly the paul bros aren’t really chord guys; their chord progressions are almost always pretty basic and it’s more about leveraging synth sound design imo ~ one thing (probs one of the most important techniques for Jai's music in particular) is to always play the same chords/melodies going up and down octaves ~ he has literally done this in every song he has ever released and it’s what’s keeps the basic chords sounding fresh.
For mixing I say the three most distinctive elements if we talking bait ones era are tape saturation, sidechain compression and spatial widening/movement (especially for synth bass) Its sort of what made the sound so messy/choatic yet so distinctive because things are always dynamically unstable and moving.
If you want more modern era polished jai paul id say focus more on the compression/spatial widening/movement of just the synth/sub bass, (listen to what the bass is doing in tracks like he or time by gambino) instead of the whole mix, it will make the mix sound much cleaner.
some tips for mixing drums like jai are always shuffle the dynamics of your drum hits, especially hi hats. experiment with layering acoustic handclaps on top of your snares for extra snap (real ones, not just one sample)
Lemme know if you want more specific tips
appreciate it.
I’m definitely looking for more specific tips in terms of tape saturation/sidechanning
This was really helpful though
yeah i think this is immediately my favorite song of hers lol. great groove, great vocal, just a well made pop song. s*** feels good
Shimmer is still crazy tho
So what's next for Jai? What's the outlook?
